When you think about the Netherlands, you think tulip fields, windmills and, of course, Amsterdam. The Dutch capital is know for its various sources of naughty entertainment, but it would be a huge mistake to dismiss Amsterdam as merely a place for partying.

The city is also steeped in history (which is obvious when you see how lovingly old buildings have been restored and tended), and it has a hip, artsy culture that is best observed in cafes, as always. Amsterdam’s cafe culture is something to behold, and you can while away many hours in at a window table in a quaint cafe, so here’s a list of the best cafes in Amsterdam.

Cafe Welling, J.W.Brouwerstraat

Amsterdam has a lot of the so-called brown-cafes, coffee shops whose walls have been stained brown by tobacco smoke and the long years of use. Cafe Welling is one of these places, and can best be described as cozy and comfortable.

Welling is close to several museums, and it is also a meeting place for the artsy and literary people of the city, and a good concert venue, oftentimes.

In ‘t Aepjen, Zeedijk

In ‘t Aepjen is another brown cafe, located in one of the oldest buildings in the city. The wooden spiral staircase and the numerous Rembrandt reproductions lend a somewhat baroque feel to the cafe. You will notice lots of monkey motifs in the decor, because in the past sailors used to abandoned their unwanted monkeys here.

Cafe Latei, Zeedijk

If you like Arabian style coffee, you can have your fill at Cafe Latei, a unique mix between an antique and second hand shop, a cafe, and rock and roll bar.

The decor is spiced up by a lot of color and hundreds of antiques (as well as junk) that you can buy (anything from earthenware to fake nylon wigs) and which you can stare at while having some coffee and cake.

Cafe Vertigo, Vondelpark

If you visit Amsterdam in summer or spring and you prefer drinking your coffee outdoors, you can sit down at the terrace of Cafe Vertigo, located in the rather picturesque Vondelpark. If you can get seats on the terrace on the roof of the cafe, you will get a nice view of the guests below you and the trees surrounding the cafe. If you want a snack, ask for tapas, Vertigo excels at them.

Reijnders, Leidseplein

Reijnders is a traditional Dutch brown cafe dating back to the 1880s, very popular among the locals. The cafe is large, with high ceilings, yet intimate and friendly, and it’s a good place for a few drinks in the evening, as well as coffee or tea in the afternoon.

The breakfast is delicious, and so are many of the items on the menu, and on Sundays they have magnificent roast dinners.
