The vast majority of museums collect paintings, sculptures, historical exhibits, while others exhibit things that one is most used to see on the street – like cars, for example. Any car enthusiast knows that some car are works or art, and belong in a museum, or at least in the private collection of someone who can appreciate their worth.

Luckily, if you’ve been known to wax lyrical about the sleek curve of a car hood, then you won’t have to keep an eye out for antique cars every time you go out on the street. Just visit some of the best automobile museums in the world, where you can see classics, unique cars, and learn about their evolution of their design and engineering.

    Volkswagen Autostadt, Wolfsburg, Germany

VW is no small fry in the automobile industry, and its popularity in Europe is good enough reason to establish a museum. The Volkswagen museum is a serious business, so don’t expect to buy car air fresheners at a souvenir shop. Mostly German car brands are on displays, as well as their partners, like the Skoda or Bentley. You can see the original Beetle, an Audi from the 30’s with a mother-of-pearl dashboard and much more.

National Corvette Museum, Bowling Green, Kentucky, USA

The corvette is not only a very fine car, but also a pop culture symbol of freedom and adventure in the US. Although it almost went extinct a few times in its history, the corvette’s museum is well deserved.

The museum is located at the corvette factory where every single car has been produced since 1981, so along with admiring rare and unique corvette models, you can also take a guided tour of the factory.

    Toyota Mega-Web, Tokyo, Japan

Although the Toyota museum in Tokyo is almost like a huge car themed amusement park, hardcore car enthusiasts will probably appreciate the History Garage the most, which has a motorsports section as well as a hefty number of rare street cars. In addition to this, you can ‘drive’ a robotic driverless car, or really drive Toyota models available only in Japan,  and learn about hybrid technology.

    Mille Miglia Museum, Brescia, Italy

Mille Miglia Museum is dedicated to the iconic car race of the same name, which took place in 1927-1957 from Brescia to Rome. The museum is housed in a restored 11th century monastery, and its collection includes various rare Italian cars (1955 Monza Scaglietti and the 1937 Lancia Aprilia for example), as well as an entire section dedicated to Ferrari cars.

Famous casino and hotel owner William Harrah was a huge car enthusiast, and his extensive collection is displayed in Reno. One of the most interesting parts of the collection is “Cars of the Stars” section, which includes the 1949 Mercury that James Dean’s character drove in Rebel Without a Cause, or Frank Sinatra’s 1961 Ghia.
