  • Tanzania on horseback

Tanzania is one of the oldest continually populated places on earth, practically the cradle of human civilization. It is not only a country with a fascinating culture, but also breath-taking landscapes that few other places can boast of. A land of extremes, Tanzania has both the highest peak in Africa (Mt. Kilimanjaro) and the lowest lake (Tanganyika), plus a chunk of the largest lake in the wold (Lake Victoria, which it shares with Uganda and Kenya).

All in all, if you want to explore Tanzania, you should try something different that will allow you to see every bit and nook of the country at your leisure – for example, explore Tanzania on horseback.

    Finding a tour operator

Horseback safaris are very much similar to safaris on a jeep, except that they bother the wildlife a lot less, they are more pleasant and eco-friendly. There are lots of travel agencies and small independent tour agencies that offer horseback tours, and while most of them will have a trail that circles Mount Kilimanjaro, you will find slightly different trails on each company’s menu.

The highlight of any horseback trail is the wildlife, which you can see from pretty much up close. Horseback trails will also take longer, because you will have to do quite a bit of traveling until you find that herd of elephants or zebras – but no worries, the natural wonders you’ll see on the way will make the trip worth it! If you don’t want any surprised, choose a tour operator that has been reviewed on travel sites (searching forums for discussion is a good start).

    Accommodation

Horseback tours can take up to a week, or even more, and you’ll sleeping in the wilderness during the trip. Tour operators usually have several options when it comes to accommodation. You can either sleep in a luxury lodge (although this ruins a lot of the safari experience), basic lodges that will basically be a roof over your head and bare necessities, or just camp under the African sky.

Camping in tents will be a great experience for those who are already used to camping out in the wild. Even if you can sleep in the tent, the tour operators will usually take care of setting up the camp, and there’s not much for you to do.

    Itineraries

Itineraries will vary from company to company, but most of them will take you at some point to the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro, where the wildlife is especially abundant.

Each day, the rides usually start early in the morning (as early as 6 or 7), and after breakfast you can expect up to 8 hours of riding a day, with breaks in between, of course – but the schedule for the day is established by each tour operator.
