Johannesburg

So far we’ve seen what the soon to be host of the FIFA World Cup 2010 edition, South Africa, can offer in terms of natural parks, historical routes and lifestyle. If you are determined to visit the country during the Wold Cup, then you will probably spend a lot of time in the cities. This is why today we give you a short guide about South Africa’s biggest and best known cities:

Cape Town

We’ve already said a lot about Cape Town in our latest posts. This picturesque city on the southwestern coast is just like a tourist magnet: here you will find splendid nature, historical landmarks, a diverse culture and, most important, some pretty decent rates. Cape Town represents a perfect mix between the strong colors and flavors of traditional Africa and the culture of wines and fine dining brought by the European colonists. And you could spend weeks just exploring the beautiful beaches, the flower gardens and the fascinating surroundings of Table Mountain.

Pretoria

South Africa ‘s national capital has left behind its tormented past and is now one obf the biggest and richest cities on the continent. A strategic location and a distinguishing architecture make Pretoria a great city to visit. If you have some time to spend in Pretoria, then make sure you visit Marabastad (a historic commercial district) as well as few of the city’s famous flea markets.

Johannesburg

Here in the heart of South Africa you will find a modern metropolis, also known as the City of Gold. Its pleasant climate and flourishing economy have made Johannesburg a favorite destination not only for business men and foreign investors but also for people all over the continent in search for a job (a fact that also explains Johannesburg’s cosmopolitanism).

You first impression of Johannesburg might lead you into believing that Johannesburg is just the typical contemporary city, dominated by skyscrapers and crowded streets. However, Johannesburg is more like a gigantic park: there are several million tress inside the city borders, and, at some point in history, they have all been planted by man.

Port Elisabeth

There is much more to drive people towards Port Elisabeth than a football match. First of all, Port Elisabeth represents the main gateway towards the county’s greatest treasure, the Valley Bushveld (Seaview Game and Lion Park, Kragga Kamma Game Park, Addo Croc and Lion Ranch are only some of the rich nature reserves situated in the proximity of Port Elisabeth).

Part of the Nelson Mandela Metropole, Port Elisabeth is also famous for its splendid beaches and abundant sea fauna (here you you find the best places for spotting dolphins, whales and all kinds of sea birds).

Durban

A walk along Durban’s Golden Mile (a coastal area at the Indian Ocean, containing numerous accommodation and entertainment facilities as well as some of the finest beaches in the country) can help you understand why Durban is now a favorite touristic destination in South Africa. Not to mention that Durban lies the in the very heart of the KwaZulu-Natal, a region whose history and traditions are simply fabulous.
