The Mediterranean is not a sea like any other. Probably no other ‘big pond’ in the world has such a complex meaning as the Mediterranean. One can never think about it and not imagine picture perfect views of either the Cote d’Azur, the beaches of Sardinia, or some hip beach on the coast of Italy.

And more than that, the term now means an entire way of life. Good wine, good food, sunlight and most of the time, the peace of nature. If you want a journey that you won’t forget soon, take a tour of the Mediterranean coasts and its quaint cities, and revel in their unspoiled beauty. Here is a list of what we consider to be some of the most scenic coastlines destinations along the Mediterranean.

Tarragona, Spain

Tarragona has a long history, dating back to the 3rd century BC, when it used to be a Roman military camp. The city itself is quite interesting, with the usual Spanish assortment of  plazas and tapas bars, but the best part of it are the Roman ruins lying on the beach.

The five main beaches are located north of the town, and you can take a long 6 kilometer walk along them, but be careful to avoid the rather large and busy shipping port (unless you are interested in it). There’s an impressive Roman theater next to the sea, and it’s definitely worth seeing.

Narbonne, France

Narbonne was one of the first Roman colonies in France, and of course, there is a lot to see there for the amateur historian. The city is small and elegant, despite the fact that it lacks the grandeur of Avignon and Carcasonne. The beach of Gruisson, located 20 kilometers away from the city, is famous for its unique beach huts and wild landscape.

Carcassonne, France

Carcassonne is one of the most important destinations in France if you are looking for medieval vestiges. The city has one of the best preserved Cathar castles in the country, and the medieval town is very atmospheric, if a little crowded in the summer months.

There are several popular beaches around the city, but if you want something more secluded, you should visit the wild coasts of Les Ayguades, La Franqui and Leucate-Plage, located more or less midway between Carcassonne and Narbonne.

Nice, France

Nice is a must-see destination on the Mediterranean coast, and it is a good starting point for daytrips all along the French Riviera. The Colline du Chateau, overlooking the harbor of Baie des Anges offer magnificent views of both the city and the sea. If you want to take a truly scenic walk along the coast, head on foot in the direction of Monaco, and walk along the cliffs until Coco Beach.

La Spezia, Italy

The city of La Spezia is one of the most beautiful on the Ligurian coast, and it has the great advantage of being located in a little corner of heaven blending picturesque coasts and the view of mountains. There are many gardens along the beaches, where you can see some of the strangest plants in Europe.

Choose La Spezia as your headquarters to visit the absolutely fascinating Cinque Terre, five coastal villages which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
