erato in Travel Planning | NO COMMENTSPorto Alegre during the 2014 World Cup
The Brazilian city of Porto Alegre gives home to about 1.5 million people and it is the state capital of Rio Grande do Sul. The beautiful, culturally rich city is the southernmost metropolis in Brazil and has got a subtropical climate which makes the Porto Alegre even more exotic.
As any large city, there are two large football clubs competing the dividing the fans here as well. One is the Gremio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense playing in black and blue and the other is Sport Club Internacional wearing red and white. Both teams are highly significant on the palette of Brazilian football.
Estadio Beira-Rio
Nicknamed in Portuguese the Giant of Beira-Rio – as it is the largest arena on the southern part of Brazil with a capacity of over 50 thousand spectators, the stadium is the home of local club Sport Club Internacional and has a beautiful setting right on the bank of Rio Guaiba.
Interesting fact that the arena was built in over a decade and with a lot of help from the local fans. They brought and donated materials: metal, cement, bricks and also a helping hand to the builders when needed.
Estadio Beira-Rio was, of course, also renovated for the 2014 World Cup. It got a new and modern metal roof to cover the stands and ramps.
