How to organize a round the world trip
When Jules Verne wrote his adventure novel Around the world in eighty days in 1973, a journey around the globe in such a short time seemed the stuff of legends. But more than a century later, traveling has gotten a lot more accessible, and you don’t have to be a wealthy English gentlemen in order to accomplish the feat.
A trip around the world is not that uncommon anymore, and possibly less adventurous than in Jules Verne’s time, but it’s still a huge project. Organizing a trip like that takes a lot of planning, but it is ultimately more rewarding than any other journey you could take. So here are some tips on how to organize a round the world trip, for the adventure-hungry globe trotter.
First steps
Travel insurance is a must, even if you are not planning on doing anything that could injure you. In case that something happens to you (even if it’s nothing more serious than a twisted ankle), you don’t want your travel funds to be sucked up my medical care bills. Insurance can also cover the cost of stolen items, cancellations or lost items, and although it takes a lot of bureaucratic muddle to get your money, it’s better than nothing.
Packing
Even if you don’t plan on staying in the same place for long, a journey around the world will take a considerable time. So you have to pack just enough to manage, but not so much that your luggage becomes a huge bother. Your destinations will decide what type of clothes you should pack, but don’t forget any gear you might need either – you never know when a pair of hiking boots can save the say. Music players and e-readers will save you from boredom when necessary, and a camera will record the ups and downs of your trip.
Money matters
One of the biggest concerns of around the world travelers is the budget, and that means not only financing you trip, but also taking care of bills at home. Arrange for your bills to be sent electronically if possible, and pay them online, even schedule them to be paid automatically if you can.
Traveler’s checks are rarely used anymore because you can just withdraw money from ATM’s, but it’s good to have an emergency fund in the form of some traveler’s checks just in case. A money belt is a great security measure, and you might also consider carrying two wallets instead of one – one with your important documents and ID’s, and one with some spending money.

For an around the world traveler, planning your exact route is imperative, especially if your trip will take a long time. Let friends and family know where you’ll go and when, so they’ll know that if you can’t contact them it’s because you’re in a jungle, and not kidnapped or lost.
Also, mixing hot and cold destinations is not the best of ideas, mostly because you end up carrying far more luggage. Considering the season as well as the itinerary is also a good idea – after all, you don’t want to visit some amazing place during the rainy season and end up staying in the hotel room for days!
