Famous streets in the world

Some cities are more famous than others because they’re bigger, livelier, more modern etc, and the same goes for streets too. There are a few streets in the world that have actually become better known than the cities they belong to. These streets are so much more than convenient strips of concrete that take you from one place to another, they are genuine tourist attractions on their own.

Sure, sometimes the shops that you find on these streets are more interesting than a few cobblestones, but if historical value is important to you, you’ll definitely want to walk down a few of these lanes and avenues.

La Rambla

If you’re visiting Barcelona, then there’s no way you will miss Plaça Catalunya, the heart and soul of the city. La Rambla, Spanish for boulevard, is made up of a series of interconnected streets that lead from Plaça Catalunya to the Cristopher Columbus Monument, another hallmark of Barcelona.

The successive Ramblas (there are several of them) are a favourite of not only tourists, but locals too, so be prepared to meet the crowd.

Princes Street

Edinburgh is full of quaint streets, take the Royal Mile for example. Princess Street might not be as glamorously historical as its older and more distinguished neighbor, but if shopping and fun is your goal in Edinburgh, this street is the place for you. Princess Street is a combination of brand stores, beautiful old buildings and amazing open vistas. This street is so well liked by the locals that there is an order of the Parliament that prevents further building on the south side, so as not to disturb the view of the Old Town and Edinburgh Castle.

Route 66

If you’ve watched at least 5 American movies in our life, chances are that you’ve heard about Route 66. And even if you’re not a movie fan, it’s likely that you’ve read a book or heard a song about it. Route 66 is a symbol of  all-American road trips, complete with sleepy towns, gas stations and diners.

Despite being removed from the US Highway System in 1985, Route 66 maintained its iconic fame over the years, and you can still make the way from Chicago to Los Angeles by way  of the Historic Route 66, as it is known today.

Bourbon Street

New Orleans is full of delightful nooks and crannies, twists and turns that can charm a tourist any day, but nothing compares to the neon glory of Bourbon Street. Spanning the length of the famous French Quarter, Bourbon Street is known as the epicenter of typical New Orleans-style decadence: great restaurants, bars, souvenir shops and even a striptease club or two. If you happen to visit the city at Mardi Gras, Bourbon Street will shower you with a hundred times more colour and sound than normally – a shocking change from the quiet southern peacefulness of the daytime.

Rue de Bouchers

Even if you visit Brussels with the intention of seeing its major landmarks, there’s no way you will be able to avoid Rue de Bouchers (that is, unless you suffer from a stuffed nose), because the delicious smells wafting from this streets will not let you go any further without a better look.

Rue de Bouchers is a dream come true for any self-respecting gourmet. Apart from the beautiful 17th century architecture, this street is literally lined with gourmet restaurants that will embezzle you with their divine dishes.
