    Ocho Rios

    Ocho Rios

Easter is approaching fast, and some of you are probably thinking of going on a trip for the Easter weekend. Easter might be a religious holiday at its core, but it is also a chance to celebrate with your family by doing what you love most – traveling.

While some people are lucky enough to have a week or more off work, some travelers will have to make do with only a couple of free days. So here are some Easter travel ideas for 2011 that will be just perfect for a weekend getaway.

    Jamaica Carnival

Jamaica’s carnival begins one week before Easter, and the events continue until the Monday after. All sorts of parties and festivities are taking place in and around Montego bay, Kingston and Ocho Rios.

The carnival usually includes lots of live bands, but the main event is on Easter morning, which starts with a daybreak party and continues all day with marches and floats until late at night. Revelers usually wear costumes, so don’t forget yours!

    Seville and Granada, Spain

In Spain, the Semana Santa, the week between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, is quite an important event, and even more so in Seville, where tens of thousands of monks take to the streets.

The procession can be quite cheery, and usually there are quite a few lavishly decorated floats accompanied by music. In Granada, the procession is pretty much in the same vein.

    London, UK

The famous Cambridge vs Oxford Boat Race is taking place on Easter Sunday this year, so if you like boat racing in general or if you simply want to see the epic battle of the two universities, head to the banks of the Thames in London for Easter Sunday.

Many people gather to watch the race because they fancy some crew member or other, but the event is pretty exciting even if you don’t have any favorites to cheer for.

    Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg is a great holiday destination any time of the year, but during Easter it becomes downright magical. The Easter Festival is a dazzling event, with classical music performances by a variety of choirs and orchestras (the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra plays every year). The city is a delightful destination for all those who are interested in art and culture (and for fans of the Sound of Music film).

    New York City, US

If you are planning to go to mass on Easter Sunday, go to the famous St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, and enjoy the atmosphere and the beautiful architecture. After mass, you can head to Central Park for some Easter festivities, and if you have kids, they can take part in the Easter Egg Hunt.
