British resort towns to visit this summer

British seaside towns have an inimitable charm that probably goes back several centuries in time, when they were the favorite summer or winter retreats for the wealthy and affluent. Nowadays, the Brits prefer sunnier regions to their cloudy island, but since this summer is definitely going to be too hot, why not visit a place where you can cool down for a while?

These former sleepy little villages rose to fame when the health benefits of salt water where discovered, and ever since they have been important holiday destinations for the British and tourists alike. So here are the most popular British seaside resorts that you can visit this summer.

Brighton, East Sussex

Located south of London, not far from the capital, Brighton’s location has been in its favour since its establishment as a seaside resort in the 18th century. The town is not large, but lately is has become popular with artists and other celebrities who want to escape the bustle of London.

Brighton has a very bohemian, old-school atmosphere, and pieces of the town look like they haven’t changed for centuries. Places of interest: the Brighton Pier, the burned remains of the West Pier, the Royal Pavilion, St. Batholomew’s Church.

Bath, Somerset

Located in the hear of Somerset, Bath is a World Heritage Site, not only because of its Roman origins, but also due to its Medieval and Georgian architecture. Bath has an intense cultural life (several cinemas, theatres, concert halls, galleries and museums) and a lively nightlife, but its main attraction have always been its hot springs.

For centuries, Bath has been welcoming tourists who came to take advantage of its spas. The town is laden with imposing buildings and streets, despite having been seriously damaged by bombs during WWII. The locals do not like modern buildings in their town, which only increases the old-world charm of the place.

Scarborough, North Yorkshire

Scarborough is the largest city in North Yorkshire, so if you want both the charm of a Victorian spa and the advantages of a modern city, this is the perfect resort for you. There are several sandy beaches in the area, as well as a mineral spa, and lots of cultural attractions (Scarborough Castle, for example). The best things about this resort is that the beaches are very safe, and there is accommodation suitable for every kind of budget.

Bournemouth, Dorset

Bournemouth has been a thriving spa resort since Victorian ages, and it still hasn’t lost any of magnetism. What made Bournemouth different from all the other seaside resorts were the surrounding pine forests and beautiful scenery. The forests are still standing, and various events now take place in the so-called Pine Walk. Also, there are 7 miles of beautiful, clean beaches where you can swim or take short boat trips. Other landmarks include St. Peter’s Church, the Bournemouth Oceanarium and the Russel-Cotes Museum.

Harrogate, North Yorkshire

Another beautiful spa town in North Yorkshire, Harrogate is somewhat quieter than other resorts, but still very popular with tourists. Despite that, Harrogate completely lacks the ‘commercial’ feel that other popular resorts have.

The towns is famous for the sheer quantity of its flower displays, and also for one of its tearooms, called Betty’s Tearooms, where the Queen herself drinks her afternoon cuppa when she visits (which is why you’ll have to queue for quite some time if you want to get it).
