  • Best Winter Festivals in the US

As bizarre as it might seem, winter is, despite the cold weather, the most prolific time for festivals. Just think about it: in winter we celebrate the most popular Christian holiday – Christmas, the arrival of a new year, and last, but not least, the carnival period that precedes Mardi Gras.

Overall, although winter might seem as the last season when people would like to go out in the streets and party (with the exception of the whole Southern Hemisphere, of course, where is summer time), this season sets the tone for the wildest parties and street festivals.

But apart from the omnipresent Christmas and New Year’s Eve, people all over the world have found their own way to celebrate winter. Some of the most interesting winter festivals take place in the USA, where the festival lover will get a sample of all kinds of manifestations, from the President’s Day to the Frozen Dead Guy Festival.

    Mardi Gras in New Orleans

Since we didn’t mention the New Orleans Carnival in our article about Mardi Gras manifestations, it is time to give this much appreciated event its lion share. Each year between February and March, New Orleans gets ready to celebrate its biggest event: street performers, musicians and the general public fill the city’s streets with strange costumes, colorful masks and the traditional beads.

The Mardi Gras Parade in New Orleans is officially the most popular such even in the USA, an event which allows people to be as extravagant and wild they want to be.

Frozen Dead Guy Days Festival in Nederland, Colorado

When it comes to extravagance and out of the ordinary events, few places can compete with the picturesque Colorado. Each year in March, the little town of Nederland becomes the stage of some odd events like a ‘coffin race’ or a ‘polar plunge’. Weirdos all over the continent can come here to present their costumes during the annual parade or have the audience listen to the strangest poems during the meetings of the Frozen Dead Poets Society. Gourmands can try their luck at eating the biggest number of ‘blue balls’ and wining the 100$ at stake.

    Chocolate Festival

But when it comes to the joy of eating, nothing cam compare with the pure pleasure of tasting hundreds of types of chocolate during Carolina’s Chocolate Festival. Bringing chocolate lovers and producers together in a 3 days celebration of the widely acclaimed Southern Chocolate, this year’s edition will be held between the 5th ans 7th of February. Featured events include a special chocolate dinner event, a chocolate baking contest and the one and only Chocolate Spa.

    President’s Day

As for some more official events, President’s Day represents one of the bast reasons for the American people to express their patriotic pride in a cold February Day. Although President’s Day is celebrated all over the nation, nothing can compete with the annual manifestations taking place in Alexandria, Virginia, George Washington’s native town. People remember their first president by attending old-fashioned balls, battle reenactments and a huge and solemn street parade.
