In case yesterday’s post has whetted your appetite for Europe, today we’re going to do a little virtual sightseeing and see what European attractions one can enjoy for free. With all the on line travel applications that we have today, it is quite easy to estimate the costs of a trip.
But when it comes to attractions, things get a little complicated: in a big city like London or Paris, you might end up paying a museum entrance fee that is half of your accommodation price. However, keep in mind that many hostels offer free (inexpensive) city tours and maybe even a list of free attractions, just as some of the famous European Museums have a free admission day. So here come today’s seven picks:
Berlin, Germany
There is way much more in Berlin than famous clubs and modern architecture! Germany’s capital is home to an impressive number of museums and art galleries, encompassing thousands of years of civilization.
You can start by declaring Thursday the official museum visiting day, because this is the day when most of the city’s museums charge nothing after 2 pm (Bode Museum, Pergamon and Alte Museum are only a few examples).
London, United Kingdom
Finding a free attraction is such an expensive city like London is pure gold. Fortunately, no one will charge you for starring at the queen’s guards: just make sure that you find a good spot, as the square in front of Buckingham Palace can get really crowded. You can also try out Tate Modern and Westminster Abbey.
Venice, Italy
Venice might be in terrible lack of budget-friendly hostels, but it totally compensates in terms of transportation. You don’t even need to rent a gondola or water taxi to get around, as most of the city can be seen on foot. Also, admission to the impressive San Marco Basilica is free, provided you don’t want to go up in the balcony the overlooks the square.
Kerry, Ireland
If you prefer the great outdoors to Europe’s monuments and museums, then there is no need for me to add that you can enjoy most of Europe’s nature for free. And speaking of nature, Ireland’s marvelous scenery can be admired in the proximity of Kerry (which are officially known as the ring of Kent) with no costs at all.
Antwerp, Belgium
A trip to Belgium that doesn’t include beet sampling can as well be considered a total fail. In Antwerp, you can taste some freshly brewed Haacht as part of the factory’s one hour and a half guided tour. Just be there in the afternoon during the weekdays and the gatekeeper will now where to send you.
Warsaw, Poland
An ex-prison near Warsaw downtown has become home to one of the best multi-media museums in this part of Europe. The Warsaw Uprising Museum contains thousands of artifacts, testimonials and military gear form World War II and serves both educational and commemorative purposes. For a moving insight into the story of the polish resistance, visit this state-of-the-art museum (admission is free on Sundays).

Just like Venice, Amsterdam is very friendly with long distance walkers.
