Our one week ‘Backpacking Europe’ series has reached its final episode, in which I decided to give you some useful tips on where you can go bargain hunting in Europe. As much as one tries to stick to the budget, shopping is the kind of experience that you just can’t say no to. Whether you go shopping for those places where you can get the best price/quality ratio.
If you are determined to see the wonders of Paris, London or Rome, then get ready for considerable expenses. But as popular and over-priced some of these cities must be, keep in mind that locals must also have their shopping hide-outs and that there is no bargain-free destination. So here we go:
Paris
Where else but in the world’s fashion capital should our virtual journey begin? As mesmerizing and tempting the lights of Champs Elysee might be, this is no place for a backpacker. From a backpacker’s perspective, the best places to go bargain hunting in Paris would the city’s flea markets – just tell any Parisian about St. Ouen de Clignancourt or Porte de Vanves and you will soon be looking at century old furniture, old jewelries and all kinds of rare artifacts.
Don’t forget to check out the second-hand book stands along the Seine as well as the famous food markets (Rue Cler, Saxe-Breteuil Market, or Marche de Grenelle).
Amsterdam
Due to its severe apartment crises, Amsterdam has become one of the most expensive cities in Europe. But no matter how expensive the accommodation, a visit through the city’s flower markets, flea markets and antique shops will let you know that you have come to the right place. Just as you get off the plane, you will discover that Amsterdam’s airport shops and duty-frees are among the cheapest on the continent.
As for the city’s permanent flea-market, Sunday morning market on Albert Cuypstraat or numerous art shops and galleries, they have long acquired a landmark status.
