Costa Rica, a Central American country that can claim to be one of the most popular green travel destinations in the world, is one of those places on the planet where you can embark on an adventure as soon as you get off the plane.
In Costa Rica, an adventure is always lurking behind the corner because although urban areas are not at all boring, it’s the exquisite natural regions that take up much of the territory and attract throngs of eco-friendly travelers who are mindful of the environment and try to leave everything as they found it.
If you like your trips rough, down to earth and peppered with interesting nature, plants, animals and lots of exciting activities, then you should definitely give adventure travel in Costa Rica a chance.

Costa Rica is well known for its diverse fauna and flora, and this biodiversity is precisely what attracts so many green travelers to the country. Approximately 6% of the planet’s plant and animals species can be found on this small patch of land, and while you might not be able to see all of the 1500 species of Costa Rican orchids, there are a few choice spots where you can find a lot to see.
Caribbean Costa Rica is the least popular region of the country, but that means that it’s gold for adventurers who like water sports (especially whitewater rafting), or wildlife spotting (sea turtles who lay eggs in spring in Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge).
The northern plains are famous for the Arenal Volcano, and its magnificent forests with few human inhabitants – Los Angeles Cloud Forest is definitely worth a visit.For an abundance of national parks, visit the southern regions: Chirripo National Park and Corcovado National Park are extremely beautiful, and there are other areas which will appeal to adventurers too, like Península de Burica.

There are at least two ways to go about adventuring in Costa Rica: either sign up for an adventure tour or go off on your own, which is not as difficult as it might sound.Tours are a great way of seeing some of the most interesting spots of the country, and while many tours focus on a particular type of activity (rafting, kayaking, canoeing), there are several tour operators that offer trips which include wildlife watching, hiking and/or sports.
If you don’t want to be tied to a tour, you can organize smaller trips yourself – either pick a base of explorations (Fortuna near Arenal Volcano, or BriBri) or take a longer roadtrip or cycling trip. In any case, you wont lack things to do while in Costa Rica: it’s a paradise for hiking, trekking, wildlife watching and all manner of river sports.
