5 Warm Escapes for 2010 Winter

There’s definitely a lot of charm in the winter holidays: the warmth of family reunions, the aroma of freshly baked cookies and the artistic flight of the first snowflakes. However, with all the climate change, winters become more and more extreme: temperatures stay under zero more than they’re supposed to and spring arrived behind the schedule. But in the age of affordable traveling, escaping winter has become easier than ever. A vacation in the Southern hemisphere or on some tropical island might prove to be the perfect Christmas gift or even the cure for post-holiday melancholia. Here comes a list of five possible winter remedies:

Tenerife

The best thing about Tenerife is the fact that no matter when you go, you’ll find almost the same temperatures (no wonder it’s been dubbed the “Island of Eternal Spring”). Tenerife is the largest island in the Canary archipelago, with an annual tourist flow of approximately 5 million. Being a touristic spot par excellence, Tenerife has all the advantages of a world class destination: five star hotels, wide beaches, beautiful volcanic mountains and thriving nightlife.

Cyprus

You could spend years just studying the intricate history of Cyprus. This Mediterranean island is now split between the Republic Of Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Nevertheless, this political separation is not an impediment for visiting Cyprus and discovering its fascinating past. Winter might not be the perfect time to go to the beach (however the weather is still fairly warm), but you’ll definitely enjoy Cyprus’s diverse culture and widely acclaimed Mediterranean diet.

Egypt

What can be told about Egypt in addition to the billions of praises that have already been brought to this millenary civilization and its amazing accomplishments?  Winter in Egypt tends to be warm (average temperatures between 13 and 21?C), with a little more precipitations than in summer. This, however, can only work in the advantage of sightseeing (with temperatures constantly rising above 30 ?C the hot Egyptian summer is no joke). You will also have the chance to see the country from a new perspective: during some winter months, Sinai Mountains get covered in snow, thus forming an interesting contrast with the surrounding desert.

Kenya

Situated right on the Equator, this East African country receives more and more tourists every year. Most of these tourists are driven by Kenya’s tropical climate and rich fauna. From all African countries, Kenya is the best choice when it comes to observing wildlife: it’s the born place of safaris. Seeing live what you could only watch on National Geographic – Africa’s “big five”, the annual animal migration and the fascinating culture of the Maasai tribe – has all the chances to become the adventure of a lifetime.

Fiji

Warm weather all year round, tropical forests and sea water so clear that it seems to have been especially designed for scuba diving, what can you expect more? Maybe to find out that form the hundreds of islands and islets that form the Fiji archipelago, only 106 are inhabited. This means not only thousands of square miles of virgin territory to explore, but also unprecedented intimacy. A good thought to meditate on with winter already at our doors…
