  • 5 luxury travel destinations which are actually affordable

    Bridgetown, Barbados

Some people like to travel rough, with only minimal luggage stuff in a battered backpack, a tiny budget and a taste for adventure. But even the most passionate alternative lifestyle-adept independent traveler will have to admit that she or he has dreamed at least once of stepping into the shoes of luxury travelers – ditch the tiring all-nighter trips, crowded hostels and cheap food, and soak in a spa, sleep in lavish beds and be waited on hand and foot.

But although five-star hotels and first class flights are still the domain of the rich traveler, even the average tourist can afford some luxury in some great destinations around the world. Here are 5 luxury travel destinations which are actually affordable.

    Caribbean

Despite the rumors, not all Caribbean destinations are for the filthy rich. A tropical island is often the perfect setting for luxury resorts where you can stay for a few nights in exchange for the price of your kidney, but there are many affordable bed and breakfasts and lovely inns and gueshouses that look great. Places like Peach and Quiet in Barbados, or Coco Palm Hotel in Santa Lucia will offer top-notch room and service for rates that will not break the bank.

    French Polynesia

The whole concept of overwater bungalow has been invented in French Polynesia, and naturally there are quite a few examples of these luxurious things where you’d have to spend more than $1000 per night for a bit of luxury.

But steer clear from Bora Bora and other infamously expensive island, and you can have more for less. Leeward, Marquesas and Windward Islands have perfectly beautiful beaches but none of the hype of Bora Bora, and you can stay in a bungalow or a small guesthouse that won’t have uniformed staff but will offer you everything you need.

    Riviera Maya, Mexico

The warm Caribbean water, sandy beaches, coral reefs and amazing ruins of the Maya  make the coast of northeastern Mexico a magnet for luxury resorts and high-end hotels. But if you avoid Cancun or Playa del Carmen which are notoriously expensive, you can have yourself a quasi-luxury vacation on Isla Mujeres, whose beaches are not beneath anything you find in Cancun, and which is much less expensive too. Lodge in a beachfront hotel – these locally owned places offer great value for money and quality service.

     Warsaw, Poland

The underrated capital of Poland has more historical and cultural attractions than you can shake a stick at. But although Poland is not usually on the luxury travel circuit, there are more than enough high-class hotels in Warsaw to satisfy even a billionaire.

But if you don’t want to spend all your savings on a holiday, you can still enjoy luxurious surroundings and service in Warsaw, where exceptional hotel rooms don’t always come for over the top prices.
