10 places to visit in 2011

It has been little over a month since the New Year began, and time is running out quickly for the tourist who wants to cram in as many destinations as possible this year. And I say this because there are a lot of destinations that are in the limelight this year!

Upcoming events always influence the development of a particular destination, and many of the locations on the list are just starting to become really popular. So here are the 10 places to visit in 2011.

1. London, UK

Sure, London has been a popular destination for ages, but now that it is the city where the 2012  Summer Olympic Games will be held, there are tons of new hotels, pubs and restaurants appearing all over London. Plus, there’s a royal wedding on the way, and many fans of the couple will probably flock to London.

2. Republic of Georgia

The quiet little Republic of Georgia was not your usual travel destination, unless you really like skiing. The country is practically riddled with mountains, and two locations especially (Bakuriani and Gudauri, not far from Tbilisi) are known for their spectacular off-piste and heli-skiing opportunities.

3. Iceland

Iceland’s economic crash is certainly not something to be happy about, but it did make the beautiful island more affordable – at least for tourists, if not for the locals.

4. Park City, Utah

Park City is known by those who attend the Sundance Festival, but perhaps not as a holiday destination. However, this year there’s a score of new ski resorts that will definitely attract lots of winter sports lovers.

5. The Danube

If you want to go on a cruise and you want something completely different, book a cruise on the Danube – it will take your through no less then four capitals and ten countries, with lots of eye-candy on the way: wine regions, castles, ruins and natural sights.

6. Antwerp, Belgium

If you’re into fashion, you probably already know that Antwerp is slowly becoming a fashion capital, and a genuine shopper’s paradise. Megastores selling everything from bubble gun to high class brands have been opening with terrifying rhythm in the city.

7. Tlemcen, Algeria

The spiritual heart of Algeria is not as popular as Algiers or Oran, but this year it is the Capital of Islamic Culture for 2011, which means that there will be a carnivalesque atmosphere throughout the year. There will be 300 exhibitions, concerts, screenings, theater performances, lectures and readings.

8. Erzurum, Turkey

Instead of delighting in the wonders of Urfa, you can also head to Erzurum this year, since the city is being turned into a winter sports capital in time for the 2011 Winter Universiade.

9. Guimaraes, Portugal

Guimaraes is the historical heart of Portugal, and one of the youngest cities in Europe (50% of the inhabitants are under 30). The nightlife is understandably amazing, and so are the cultural attractions.

10. Kosovo

Kosovo’s had a troubled history, but since its independence in 2008, it has been trying to rehabilitate its economy. Several sites in Kosovo are now World Heritage Sites, beautiful mountains and forests, and a youthful capital (Pristina) with amazing nightlife.
