I’m sure many of you have come to a point sometime in your traveling life, when you had to seriously stop and think whether visiting a certain place will be safe. Today’s world is full of troubles, and an interesting or beautiful country might as well be plagued by political strife too.

When planning your trip, it’s imperative that you read up on the current situation of the country you’re about to visit. Even if the country’s problems are not as bad as to discourage you from visiting it, it’s best to be prepared for, who knows, a quick escape for example. So here’s a list of the most dangerous countries in the world, which you might want to visit nonetheless.

Colombia

Remember those films with Colombian drug-dealers and crime-bosses? Well, it might no be entirely real, but reality is pretty close behind. In the metropolitan areas, rich people have armed bodyguards and bullet proof cars. Also, in Colombia you’ll face a greater risk of being kidnapped than anywhere else in the world, especially if you are a US citizen.

In the rural areas, guerilla groups such as FARC and ELN still operate, especially close to the borders. But don’t let this scare you too much, you’ll be safe when walking around most populous and central neighbourhoods, but don’t stray far from the main routes and don’t go out wandering at night.

Israel

Israel is small but very diverse, and there are so many historical and cultural sights to enjoy there. The presence of three major religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, have made Israel a wonderfully diverse place, but unfortunately, in the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip there’s the permanent risk of Israeli Forces and Palestinian Militants.

Terrorism doesn’t pose such a great risk to Israel as it used to, but you should be cautious when traveling and notify the policy whenever you see something suspicious. In the present, travel to Israel is relatively danger-free, but don’t go throwing all caution to the wind.

Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea has a fascinating culture (minus the canibalism which is supposedly still practiced ritually in some remote areas), and some amazing landscapes, but it’s not the safest o places for tourists. Big cities are strewn with gangs who call themselves raskols, and there the presence of the police is hardly felt (around 4500 officers for a population of 4 million).

Don’t be alarmed if you hear gunshots in the city (in the capital at least, it doesn’t happen very often), and don’t go to unknown places at night.

Yemen

Yemen has been plagued by civil war for years, and while people are out to get each other an not necessarily the tourists, there’s a chance that you’ll get caught in come kind of skirmish. Terrorist groups have a history of targeting tourists, and there’s also the kidnappings, tribal violence and general lawlessness.

You should run a background check on your destination before leaving, but if you are very careful, you shouldn’t have any problems (just be prepared for, well, fleeing, if something comes up).
