If you love water, then as soon as the weather gets warm you will probably want to take a trip to the seaside and indulge in the joys of beach life: swimming, lounging in the sun, or doing some water sports. But beaches are notorious for attracting huge crowds, and let’s not forget about jellyfish, riptides, sunburn and other downsides.

But if you’re not ready to give up on your plans of splashing around in the sun, why not choose a lakeside town instead as your spring/summer destination? Wherever there’s a particularly pretty lake, there will be a lakeside town as well, where you can find guesthouses, hotels, restaurants, etc. Spend your days swimming, sailing, hiking and doing other outdoor activities in some of the most picturesque lakeside towns in the world.

Bowness-on-Windermere, Lake District National Park, UK

The Lake District, true to its name, has its fair share of lakes, small village and quaint British towns that attract more than enough domestic and foreign tourists. Bowness-on-Windermere, on the shores of Lake Windermere, is famous for its beautiful views of the lake, and has been a popular tourist destination since Victorian times.

The town is full of little pubs, cafes and shops selling souvenirs and traditional foods. The countryside surrounding the town has lots of scenic hiking trails, and the lake it perfect for fishing, boating and swimming in summer.

Konstanz, Germany

Konstanz is one of the many towns and villages scattered along the shores of Lake Constance, one of the largest lakes in Central Europe. Konstanz is fairly large in comparison to the other urban areas on the lake, which means that in addition to swimming and boat trips there is a lot to do in town. Konstanz has a great theater and a philharmonic, several spas, some very interesting museums and other cultural sights.

Stresa, Italy

Stresa is part of a string of picturesque towns and cities along the shores of Lake Maggiore in Italy, and it is among the most beautiful little towns in the country.

Stresa is small and compact, and if you rent a bike you will have a great time exploring the narrow streets, the pier and the surrounding countryside. Take a trip on the cable car and hike back to Stresa, visit the nearby Borromean Islands and indulge in the town’s selection of Italian and German restaurants.

Rangeley, Maine, USA

Maine is one of the wildest, most untouched states in the US, with miles and miles of forests and windswept beaches. The small town of Rangeley is on the shores of the rather deep and large Lake Rangeley, where there’s a lot to do in summer: water ski, jet ski, tubing and boating, and there are hiking trails in the nearby forests. Rangeley is quite a popular destination in winter as well, thanks to its scenic snowmobile trails.

Nagahama, Shiga Prefectue, Japan

The small town of Nagahama on the shores of Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan, is quite popular with tourists who want water sports on the lake, as well as with those in search of cultural and historical attractions. Nagahama Castle and Ohmi Kouhouan Temple are notable attractions in town, but there are many more interested sights. In summer, the Nagahama and Kita-Biwako Fireworks Festival is very popular.
