There is no one word to sum up what Canada is like. As a country, it is big, and much of its appeal in it comes in supersized portions: big mountains, big forests, big natural parks, some big cities. But there is a side to Canada that is made unique by the tiny details, little wonders and small towns.

Small town Canada is Canada at its most charming, and a visit tot the True North is never complete without including a few small towns on the itinerary. Quaint, quiet, colorful or lively, the best small towns in Canada make delightful holiday destinations.

Rossland, British Columbia

Rossland is nestled in the mountains of Southern British Columbia, and although it started out as a rather gritty gold mining town, today it is a lovely small town of about 3500 residents. The town is located in the crater of a dormant volcano, and it has several great ski slopes, as well as some beautiful hiking trails. Rossland is small and can be explored on foot, and has several interesting historical buildings to see.

Stratford, Southwestern Ontario

Stratford is somewhat of a counterpart to the British Stratford Upon Avon, the hometown of Shakespeare, and the Canadian Stratford is internationally known for its annual Shakespeare Festival of theater. There are several small but interesting museums in the city, a British-style garden, and a avery nice park around the River Avon.

Twillingate, Newfoundland

Twillingate is a historic fishing community that turned into a prosperous tourist town that attracts a lot of visitors to Twillingate Island. Twillingate has some extremely interesting museums that tell the history of the town and display its cultural heritage, but on the more commercial side, there are several great restaurants and souvenir shops too. A boat tour of the island is a must.

Churchill, Manitoba

The most famous inhabitants of this small town are the polar bears – who don’t exactly live in the city, but close to it. The Polar Bear Capital of the World naturally has several tours that will take you to the natural habitat of the bears, but the human part of the town is just as delightful. Churchill is also an excellent place to watch the Northern Lights.

Osoyoos, Okanagan

Osoyoos is the hottest town in Canada in summer, temperature-wise,  but it is also quite lively for a town of about 5000 inhabitants. Osoyoos has quite a lot of outdoor attractions, and some very nice beaches, but the town center also has quite a few sights and museums that are well worth visiting.

There are numerous wineries and vineyards around the town, so don’t leave without tasting the local wines.
