When thinking about mountains and mountain resorts in Europe, you can’t help but think of the Alps. Sure, there are many mountain ranges in Europe, but when in comes to winter sports, the Alps are almost unbeatable. Not only are there lots of good slopes for skiing, snowboarding and other snow-related sports, but the views are also magnificent, without exception.

As you know, the Alps spread over Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany and Austria. There are countless great ski resorts in all of them, but here is a top five list of the best ski resorts in the Alps, ever.

Zermatt, Switzerland

Zermatt is notorious for having the most expensive accommodation in Switzerland, even more expensive than in the capital. But once you see the landscapes surrounding the resort, you’ll understand why so many people seek it out, and why the hotel owners don’t let rooms for cheap prices.

Zermatt is only a hamlet, but it has more hotels than houses, probably. The scenery is beautiful, and the slopes are excellent. The climate is mild, even in the winter, so you can even go camping if you don’t want to pay the exorbitant prices for accommodation in the village (just make sure not to camp above an altitude of 500 meters).

Chamonix, France

Chamonix is one of the most famous ski resorts in the French Alps, at the base of Mont Blanc. Chamonix’s slopes are so great that it has even hosted theWinter  Olympic Games. The good thing about Chamonix is that is has a wide range of accommodation options, from five star hotels to basic hostels and even camping sites. There are slopes for beginners and experiences skiers alike, so anyone can pick one that suits their level of proficiency.

Verbier, Switzerland

Verbier has the largest skiing area in the country, so there really are plenty of good slopes to choose from. There are some portions for beginners, but the vast majority of the slopes are so called ‘off-trail’, and you should have some previous experience (or be an adrenaline addict) if you want to attempt to ski down these slopes. The same goes for snowboarders too: lots of opportunities, but some of them are a bit on the dangerous side.

Zell am See, Austria

Zell am See is famous for its scenic landscapes, and also for its quality winter sports areas. The only problem with this resort is that there aren’t many accommodation options for budget travelers, as most of the hotels are quite high-class.

On the other hand, there are plenty of things to do even when you’re not busy sliding down the snowy slopes – the city itself is quite beautiful and it has lots of historical and cultural sights.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Some of the best skiing places in Germany can be found at Garmisch-Partenkirchen. There are four main ski areas in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and you can gain access to all of them for your entire holiday by purchasing a ‘happy ski pass’ – a pretty good deal, if you ask me. The resort is very popular, and quite crowded all year round, so there are plenty of hotels catering for all tastes and budgets, and in addition to that, the resort’s nightlife is quite lively too.
