When talking about holidays on lush, tropical islands, one of the first destinations that spring to mind is Hawaii. As far as US states go, Hawaii is one of the least conventional ones. Not only is it a tropical island state, but it also feels like a completely different world. Gone are the picket-fenced urban areas, charming small towns or cutting-edge sky-scrappers.

In Hawaii, there’s only beaches, forests, resorts and a seemingly perpetual holiday mood. Most tourists crowd to Hawaii to bask in the sun, swim or dive. Still, there are lots of activities that you can try while visiting Hawaii, and while they are by no means a secret kept from the hordes of tourists, these activities are not your regular fare of beach entertainment.

Sample the local coffee

Kona district, in the western part of the Big Island, is famous for its locally grown coffee beans. The volcanic slopes are an ideal place to grow coffee, and the local government is so proud if these crops that they developed the Kona Coffee Country Driving Tour.

The tour is self-guided, meaning that you simply have to take the map and check out the locations features in the tour. Visit historic and active farms where you can learn about the production process, the history of coffee, and of course, taste the Kona gourmet brew.

Dive with giant manta rays

On the beaches of Kona there’s another unusual thing that will probably make your blood run faster (just like the Kona coffee): diving at nigh together with the manta rays. These impressive fish which can grow up to 12 feet in width are not dangerous at all, they feed mainly on plankton and they are used to having humans around.Nonetheless, this is not an activity that you should try on your own, but there are lots of diving companies that offer manta ray dives.

Tour the Big Island by helicopter

Hawaii seems like the paradise on earth even when you are on earth, so imagine the sight of the whole island laid out before your eyes. The best thing about these tours is that the helicopter can get quite close to places of interest, for example waterfalls, and it can also hover over them while you gape at the beauty under you.

One of the things that are definitely worth seeing from up in the air are the volcanoes, and if you’re lucky, you can see a volcanic eruption live.

Tour the island on horseback

If you don’t like heights, you can visit the island on horseback. This is an eco-friendly way to check out the sights, and besides, you can see much more things at once than if you’re going on foot. There are several designated ride trails along the valleys and plains, and the only drawback is that you will have to go in a group, regardless whether you’re an experienced rider or not. This isn’t exactly an adventurous fantasy gallop around the island, but it certainly is a great way to explore your surroundings.

Ride a train

This is no joke, riding a train in Hawaii can be quite an uplifting experience. The Hawaiian Railway is nowadays a historic society that offers train rides on the island for tourists. The rides take about an hour and a half, during which you will discover the fascinating history of the island’s railway and see abandoned plantations and even a ghost town.
