This year’s Mardi Gras is approaching fast, February 21 is just around the corner, which gives you just enough time to dust off your most colorful attire, buy a few pounds of beads, and of course, to scout out some of the best locations where you can jump into the whirlwind that are Mardi Gras parties.

If you are a party person, any day if a good day for a party, but Mardi Gras is the best excuse of all. Although the holiday has religious roots (the last day of earthly delights before the long Lent), it turned into an occasion to shed your inhibitions and party like it’s the end of the world. So if you are looking for a reason to go out and have fun in early Spring, check out some of the wildest Mardi Gras parties in 2012.

    New Orleans, Louisiana, USA

The mother of all Mardi Gras parties and the most famous one in the world to boot is the one celebrated in New Orleans, the nightlife capital of Louisiana. The epicenter of the event if Bourbon Street, the most famous street in the French Quarter, lined with bars and clubs, but contrary to a regular night in the Quarter, the party doesn’t happen behind closed doors – it’s right on the street! There are parades on Canal Street and St. Charles Avenue (with bead throwing and all the rest), and probably all the people of age on the street will have a cup of bottle of booze with them.

    Venice, Italy

Although the Venice Carnival seems to be in a category of its own, and it lasts longer than many other carnivals: it ends on Shrove Tuesday, but it begins two Sunday before! This gives you two weeks to revel in the gilded magnificence that is the Venice Carnival.

This event dates back to the Middle Ages, but was revived in the 70’s and became more resplendent than ever. The masks and the costumes are just as much to wear as to look at!

    Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The Rio carnival needs no introduction, and in Brazil it is the event of the year, second to none. The processions of samba dancing schools, the music and costumes, the street snacks and the drinks are integral parts to the carnival. If your eyes need to take a break from all the sparkly and feathery costumes, head to the beaches for some regular parties.

    Sydney, Australia

The Australian metropolis celebrates Mardi Gras in style, but the regular proceedings are spiced up even more thanks to being coupled with a fantastic gay pride parade.

This is the best Mardi Gras party if you want to see the most imaginative costumes and floats and mingle with the most open-minded people. The parade takes place on the Saturday before Shrove Tuesday, probably because you’ll need a few days to get back on your feet after all the dancing!
