Spring is coming in Asia, and even if in some parts of this vast continent the season is not noticeable as in the northern areas, people everywhere celebrate it with festivals, dances and other events. Traveling through Asia this time of the year allows you to be part of these yearly rituals, and experience firsthand the culture of the country you’re visiting.
Small events that few travelers find out about will be happening in towns, cities, villages, but a few of them are famous enough to draw people from all over the world. So if you find yourself in Asia in the next few months, here are some of the best spring events in Asia that you might want to attend.
Shixiang Lake Tulip Festival, Chengdu, Sichuan
Tulips have been brought to China centuries ago, and they became pretty popular over time, so much that there is a huge festival dedicated to them every spring in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan. The tulips planted on the shores of Shixiang Lake are in full bloom in spring, and the festival is dedicated not only to the beauty of these flowers, but also the idea of renewal that they convey.
Takayama Spring Festival, Takayama, Japan
This fun Japanese festival takes place on April 14-15, and has been celebrated every year since the 17th century. The festival is very popular among Japanese tourists, and it is centered around the famous Hie Shrine.
The most interesting features of the festival are the heavily ornate and colorful floats that roam around town at night. Some of the floats are centuries old, and might as well be historical relics.
Songkran, Chiang Mai, Thailand
Songkran festival marks the end of the Thai year, and April 13-15 is a time of revelry. The most obvious sign that there is a festival underway is that you’ll see people throwing water at each other.
Songkran is celebrated all over the country, and you had better be prepared to get soaked on the street, especially if you’re in Chiang Mai, where the celebration goes on for six days or more.
