  • Where to eat the best pie in the US

Pie, the delicious baked dish made of pastry crust filled with all sort of delicious things, is probably one of the best known American dishes. Sweet or savory pies have been baked in the US since the colonists came from Europe, and some say that early variations of the recipe date back to Roman times.

Pies can come in variety of shapes, sizes and fillings, from bite sized goodies to huge pies that can feed an entire family. Home-baked pies are the best, but if you want to take your pie-dining experience into the outside world, there are a couple of places that will satisfy your craving. Here are some suggestions on where to eat the best pie in the US.

    Pielab, Greensboro, Alabama

The best thing about Pieland is not just that they serve excellent pies, but that the atmosphere is so good that you’ll keep on buying pies just so you can stay a while longer. This part art-studio, part bakery, part community center bakes its pies right on spot, with fresh ingredients only.

The purpose of Pielab is to draw the community of Greensboro together and have them enjoy some lemonade, conversation, and a delicious slice of pie (try the Chocolate Bourbon Pecan pie).

    The Apple Pan, Los Angeles

This Westboro eatery is better known for its burgers (it’s Hickory Burger and the Steak Burger have a huge fan following), but the dessert takes the cake. The apple pie, with its crunchy crust and juicy chunks of apple is served in the traditional way, with a dollop of vanilla ice-cream. The pecan pies and cream pies are equally good, and served with 100% pure whipped cream – and at $3.50, they are really a bargain. Plus, the 40’s looks of the place is a big plus.

    Hoosier Mama Pie Company, Chicago

Hoosier Mama’s pastry chef, Paula Haney, whips up a mean chess pie, and not only in one version, but five! In addition to the chess pie, there are so many types of pie that just reading the menu takes more than you can bear. The traditional Indiana sugar cream pie (sweet creamy brown sugar filling inside a buttery pie crust) is a great favorite with the regular customers, and so are the more regular types of pie, like pecan or meringue. Try the savory pies too, they make a great dinner!

Achatz Handmade Pie Company, Armada, Michigan

Two of Achatz’s pies, the cherry and the four berry, have won prizes at the National Pie Championship, and for good reason. They use fresh local ingredients and absolutely no preservatives, and many of the recipes have been passed down for generations.

The crusts are tender and flaky, and the fruit filings are juicy and full of flavor. The tart cherry pie at Achatz just might be the best pie in the world.
