Hot dogs are not exactly the height of cuisine, but unless you are a vegetarian, you’ve probably experienced at some point in your lifetime the craving for hotdogs. Fast food is not only useful when you are in a hurry and don’t have time for a proper meal – sometimes you just can’t help wanting to snack on something delicious and not quite healthy.
Hotdogs are just as widespread in the US as hamburgers, and there are as many varieties of hotdogs as places. So for the discerning hotdog fan, here are some tips on where to eat the best hot dogs in the US.
Sonoran Hot Dog, Tucson, Arizona
The Sonoran Hot Dog might just be one of the most unusual and mouth-watering hot dogs in the US, just as wild and snappy as the Wild West itself. A beef frankfurter is wrapped is juicy bacon and grilled slowly, then wrapped into a fluffy Mexican bun and garnished with tomatoes, pinto beans, onions, mustard, a bit of mayo and some spicy sauce.
But that’s not all, because you also get a roasted guero pepper, sometimes wrapped with bacon and stuffed with cheese. You can get these yummy treats at several street vendors in Tucson.
Lafayette Coney Island, Detroit, Michigan
Coney Island hot dogs are a type of hotdog that you can find almost everywhere in the US, perhaps save for Coney Island itself :D.
The Coney is similar to a regular hotdog, but it has a generous topping of all-meat chili in the combo too (plus some chopped onion and mustard). Some of the best Coneys in the US are served in Lafayette Coney Island in Detroit.
New York System Wiener, Rhode Island
In Rhode Island, you can find the delicious ‘New York system’ wieners (which of course you can’t find in New York). These are very similar to the Coney hotdogs, only the frankfurter is long and thin, made of pork and veal instead of beef. The wiener is served with an aromatic hot sauce that contains cumin, allspice, chili and paprika, and topped with chopped onions, celery salt and mustard.
Red Hots, Chicago
Chicago dwellers have elevated ht dog making to an art, and the red hot Chicago style hotdog is one of a kind. The frankfurter is made of steamed kosher beef wrapped into a poppy-seed bun.
The toppings are what make this hotdog truly special: mustard, chopped onions, sweet pickle relish, dill pickle, tomato, pickled sport peppers and celery salt – it’s like a garden salad in a bun!

Flo’s, a tiny diner in Cape Neddick, invented this hotdog in 1959, but since then it has become so popular that almost every hotdog joint in the state serves them. Flo-dogs are steamed wieners encased in a fluffy white bun, topped with delicious onion relish (made after a secret recipe), and a dash of creamy mayonnaise.
