kachou_n in Food Experiences | NO COMMENTSThe best street food in Delhi, India
Indian food is so widely known and loved throughout the world nowadays, that it is useful to sing its praises anymore. If your palate if fine with strong flavors and incredible spiciness, the Indian cuisine can delight your taste buds for weeks and months, and you still won’t be able to try all of it.
India is one of the most diverse countries on the planet, and its cuisine is very much a reflection of its culture. But in Delhi, most of India’s different cuisines can be found in the most surprising place: the street. So here’s a guide to the best street food in Delhi.
Indians refer to the delicious little portions of food that you can buy on the street as chaat, and the best of it can be found in the old part of the city, in the Chandni Chowk, the oldest and busiest market in Delhi.
Shree Balaji Chaat Bhandar
In Old Delhi, there’s a rule on how to find the best street food: just look for the place with the longest queue of people waiting for their turn. One such place isĀ Shree Balaji Chaat Bhandar, a small eatery that looks like it has nothing special.
However, in this case, appearances couldn’t be more deceiving, because the chaat served at this place is quite possibly the best in the city. One of their best dishes is the papri chaat, crispy fried dough wafers with boiled potatoes, chutney and yoghurt.
Bishan Swaroop
Bishan Swaroop is a well kept secret, tucked away on the side streets of Chandni Chowk. Ask the locals where to find it, they will surely know about the place.
Bishan Swaroop doesn’t have a mile-long menu, but the few things that it does serve, are so great that you won’t wish for anything else. Their specialty is the aloo tikki, a North Indian dish made of potato croquettes served with Saunth, tamarind and coriander-mint chutney and chickpeas.
Lala Babu Chaat Bhandar
Lala Babu Chaat Bhandar has a reputation as one of the friendliest chaat places around, where you’ll always be welcomed with smiles. There are lots of chaat types on their menu that are insanely popular, for example the gol gappas, dahi bhalla, mutter ki kachodi, aloo tikki, but the best is the gobi mutter samosas, a delicious cauliflower dish.
Prince’s Paan & Chaat Corner
This is a place either for the posh customer who’d rather not go forth into the crowded streets of the market, or for the traveler who doesn’t want to miss any of Delhi’s culinary delights. This neat place has amazing golgappa, small, bite-sized shells of dough, crunchy and golden, filled with a mix of tamarind, chili, chaat masala, potato, onion and chickpeas.)
