A typical view of San Francisco

As any seasoned traveler knows, there are precious few places in the world where you can eat for free. And while no one will give you a hearty meal out of the goodness of their hearts, there are a few places in San Francisco where you can get a small meal for free, provided you buy something else first. Several pubs and restaurants will offer you free snacks and even more Italian dishes when you buy drinks.

So if you’re down to your last few bucks at the end of your trip to San Francisco, you don’t have to choose between a pint of beer and food, because at these places you can get them both for the price of one. Or simply take advantage of all-you-can eat-happy hours. So here are the cheapest places to eat in San Francisco

    Amarena, Russian Hill

Every Thursday, this cozy Italian restaurant has an all you can eat buffet laden with the best and most varied Italian dishes you can imagine: pesto lasagna, a huge array of assorted pasta dishes, salads, focaccia bread (the onion flavored one is simply delicious) and other antipasti. You can pile your plate with your favorite Italian dishes, and eat a hearty meal that will keep your stomach full for the rest of the day. Not for free, but certainly not expensive if you come with an empty stomach.

    Namu, Inner Richmond

If you go to Namu on Monday evenings, the great music and atmosphere are not the only attractions of the place. If you order one drink (they have a good selection of sake and wines sold by the cup), you can have access to the bar’s very impressive Asian-inspired buffet that includes seasonal dishes that change every day. Recent Monday menys included chicken tempura, house-made beef jerky, fried pork belly, and rice with pork, seaweed, and fish eggs.

    Palio D’Asti, North Beach

If you go for a couple of drinks to Paolo D’Asti on weeknights before 7 PM, you’ll get a free pizza if you order at least two drinks. Their pizza menu includes gourmet toppings such as Berkshire pork and fennel sausage, fire-roasted peppers, arugula, or asiago cheese. What you save up on the pizza, you can use to buy once of the excellent Napa Valley wines that they have on menu.

    El Rio, Mission Dive

Show up at El Rio on Fridays around 5 PM and you can start your evening with a free plate of oysters and a barbecue. Fridays are burlesque nights, so you you can expect to enjoy your bacon-wrapped hot dogs  or grilled chicken, with sides like homemade potato salad and fresh spinach salad in the company of very originally (and often scantily) clad people.

    Sugar Lounge, Hayes Valley

Sugar Lounge is a very nice offbeat little bar that offers a Swedish buffet for free on weekdays. Of course, you will be expected to buy some drinks, but the mouth-watering array of snack foods like lumpia, vegetables, teriyaki chicken, shrimp tempura, fried sweet potatoes, and eggrolls. The bar tends to get really crowded, so get there early if you want to stuff yourself with free food.
