If you’re up to some adventure traveling this summer, then how about exploring some caves? These subterranean wonders are oftenly neglected, despite the fact that few other places on Earth can compete with the hidden beauty of the undergrounds.

Not to mention that you’ll have to possibility to visit something unique and very different from those popular landmarks which you’ve seen in so many pictures that they will inspire you no emotion when you finally get to see them with your own eyes. But caves are just gorgeous: with their weird limestone, volcanic rock or ice formations, crystal-clear underwater lakes and one-of-a-kind ecosystems, caves seem the have been designed by a mad genius’s hand.

There are thousands and thousands of beautiful caves around the world, many of which are still unexplored and very few of which are opened to the general public. So far we give you 5 of the most spectacular caves on the planet:

Mammoth Cave, United States

Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, US is actually part of a long and complicated system of caves, considered to be the world’s largest. The existence of Mammoth Cave has been known to humans for hundreds (maybe even thousands) of years – the Native Americans seem to have used part of the cave as burial places. Almost half a million of visitors enter the caves every year, get to admire the enormous caverns and explore the extensive system of trails.

Grota du Lago Azul, Brazil

A word by word translation of this cave’s name would be the ‘Blue Lake Cave'; this is exactly what you can admire in this Brazilian cave: a spectacular underground lake, radiating the most amazing nuances of blue whenever a bunch of sun rays manage to enter the cave. The whole region of Matto Grosse du Sul is populated by waterfalls, caves, lakes and rivers.

Waitomo Glowworm Cave, New Zealand

Having the feeling that you somehow stepped into a parallel universe is a common sensation that both cave explorers and visitors experience. However, there are few caves where this sensation can reach such an intensity as in Waitomo Glowworm Cave, New Zealand. The cave’s main attractions are the luminescent worms, whose body produces a glowing-in-the-dark substance in order to attract the pray. For humans, the worms are totally harmless and offering a marvelous sight.

Phong Nha Cave, Vietnam

It’s hard to capture the whole splendor of Phong Nha Cave in Vietnam in just a paragraph, considering that that its gigantic grottoes and passageways are stretching for over 7 kilometers. Here you will be able to admire some of the biggest and most interesting formations, like stalagmites, stalactites and columns of all sizes, not to mention one of the longest underwater rivers in the world.

Postojna Cave, Slovenia

Postojna Cave is widely recognized as the most visited cave in Europe. Although the accessible part of the cave adds up to approximately 20 kilometers, you can make an idea on how huge this cave really is just by seeing the train that takes all all over its grottoes and passageways.
