    Muscat

    Muscat

The sultanate of Oman might be an absolute monarchy, which might put off some travelers, but it is also one of the most developed countries in the Arab world. Over the past few decades, tourism grew into one of the most important industries of Oman, which is no surprise seeing as the country does have some amazing tourist attractions to show off.

The desert, mountains, and most importantly the lovely beaches of Oman draw more travelers than any other country in the Middle East, and if you are looking for an unforgettable cultural experience, then Oman is definitely the right destination for you. Here are our picks for the top 5 tourist attractions in Oman, but rest assured that there are many more out there!

    Bahla Fort

Bahla Fort, located at the foot of the rugged Djebel Akhdar highlands, is one of the most well preserved and elaborate fortresses in Oman. The fortress and its over 7 miles of walls date back to the 13th and 14th centuries, when the small town of Bahla was one of the most thriving oases in the desert. The fort, previously fallen into ruin, is being restored and has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1987.

    Wahiba Sands

Much of Oman is covered by the desert, and it isn’t always the most scenic kind of desert. However, if you want to see a completely surreal and jaw-dropping desert of the kind that is described in the Arabian Nights, then you should visit the Wahiba Sands, a huge sandy desert just south of Sur.

If you want more than a daytrip into the desert, you can stay at one of the several tourist resorts in Wahiba Sands.

    Masirah Island

Those who are interested in wildlife and undisturbed nature should take a trip to Masirah Island in the Indian Ocean, where you can have all the deserted beaches and interesting animal species you want. Some beaches are wild and windswept, while others are just perfect for swimming. There are four species of turtles nesting on the beaches of Masirah – you can see them at night when they come ashore, or you might bump into them when snorkeling.

    Sohar Castle

The city of Sohar in northern Oman is known as the birthplace of the legendary Sindbad the sailor, one of the most prolific fictional traveler-adventurers in any literature.

The city has bustling souks, archaeological sites and beautiful beaches, and one of the uncontested gem of the city is Sohar Castle, a 13th century marvel with a very interesting museum.

    Al-Dhalam Souk, Muttrah, Muscat

There are several old-style souks in the Omani capital, but for something completely different head to Al-Dhalam Souk in Muttrah, the market of shades, one of the oldest souks in the Arab world.

This covered market is so dark even during the day that lamps are permanently lit, hence the name. The atmosphere of the souk is inimitable, and the smells of frankincense and spices pervade every nook and corner.
