Travel is all about seeing new things which are quite different from one’s regular surroundings. But as unique as some travel destinations are, some of them simply look like out of this world. There are some places on the planet which look so completely amazing that you might think that they are from another planet, or maybe some piece of fantastic art.

Mother Nature has a way of creating landscapes which are beyond our imagination, and it would be a shame not to visit at least a few of them. So here are the top 5 otherworldly travel destinations on the planet.

    The Wave, Coyote Buttes, Arizona

The astounding rock formation called fittingly The Wave looks more like something created in Photoshop then a natural phenomenon. The sandstone rock is famous for its colorful, undulating form, but also for the strenuous hike that leads up to it. The Wave is popular with photographers, both amateur and professional.

    Zhangjiajie Forest, Hunan, China

If you’ve seen James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar, then you probably remember the imaginative CGI floating mountains in the film. Well, they were inspired by Zhangjiajie Forest in Hunan, which Cameron visited before making the movie.Rock pillars are scattered throughout the forest, and some of them are over 3500 ft tall, creating a truly surreal landscape.

    Cueva de Los Cristales, Mexico

Not far from Chihuahua, you can see one of the most amazing underground natural phenomenon ever: the giant, sparkling white crystals that fill the Cueva de los Cristales. The cave was discovered in 2000, and immediately became of the most fascinating caves on the planet.

After all, it’s not anywhere that you can see crystals the size of tree-trunks. What’s more, the crystals contain tiny pockets of seawater, created while the cave was underwater 500,000 years ago.

    Dallol Volcano, Ethiopia

Located in the hellish Rift Valley of Ethiopia where three tectonic plates are attempting to rip apart, Dallol Volcano doesn’t sound like the friendliest place on earth, but it is certainly an unusual sight. The striking green and yellow acid ponds on a landscape of iron oxide, sulfur and salt desert plains and the occasional hot brine springs look like the setting of a sci-i movie.

    Uyuni Salt Flats, Bolivia

Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world, and if you haven’t seen any salt flats before in your life, then visiting Uyuni will seem like a visit to another planet.

The exceptional flatness of the salt surface, coupled with the crystal clear sky, will make you feel like you are floating in empty space, or on a surface of a gigantic mirror.
