There are many dark caverns hidden inside American’s mountains, and since caves are really interesting destinations if you don’t mind a bit of a hike (most of the time), here’s a list of the top 5 most beautiful caves in the US.

Some caves are just like artwork produced by nature, and it’s hard to imagine that all those stalactites and stalagmites haven’t been fashioned by a very talented human hand. And since these caves are well known tourist magnets, there’s no need for a headlamp or even a flashlight.

    Caverns of Sonora, Sonora, Texas

This amazing cave system is unique on the planet thanks to its stunning calcite crystal formations, especially its helictites, delicate needle-like crystals. The highlight of the caves is the ‘snake pit’, an area so full of helictites that it truly looks like it was filled with calcified creepy-crawlies. The cave is 11 mile long, but the trail goes only 7 miles deep into the caverns.

The Lost World Caverns are certainly a beautiful sight, with all their rock formations with quaint names like Bridal Veil, Goliath, Snowy Chandelier or Ice Cream Wall, but its attraction is only increased by the numerous interesting stories circulating around it.

A prehistoric bear skeleton was found there, and a man sat on top of a30 foot rock formation for 16 days.

    Shenandoah Caverns, Virginia

Shenandoah caverns with its one mile long tour might seem like a trifle to those who have visited the caves described above, but that one mile is packed with several amazing formations: Diamond Cascade, the Grotto of the Gods, the Rainbow Lake, the Oriental Tea Garden, and the Capitol Dome. The high tech lighting used in the cave does a pretty good job of highlighting its beauty.

    Mammoth Cave, Kentucky

Mammoth Cave is the longest cave system is the whole world, but there is much more to it – after all, it is one of the oldest tourist attractions in the US. In summer, you can explore parts of the cave on your own, but at other times you need to be guided by a ranger.

Sign up for the Frozen Niagara tour to see the most eyecatching formations, or the historic tour for lengthier exploration.

    Fantastic Caverns, Springfield, Missouri

In this cave you won’t be left to wander on your own, in fact, you can’t even leave the tour tram that will take you to the end of the trail. However, during the 50 minute tour, you will have plenty of opportunities to admire the interesting stalagmites and other formations in the cave. Interesting fact: the cave was used as a speakeasy during the Prohibition.
