    Mostar

    Mostar

Usually when someone says that they are going to visit Europe, they don’t mean the Balkans as well. For some reason, despite having mostly escaped the shadows of communism and dictatorial regimes, many people are still reluctant to venture quite so far into the eastern parts of Europe.

In fact, the countries of the Balkans regions make really great holiday destinations; not only is there plenty to see there, but they also have a warm, welcoming and interesting culture (not to mention that they are also far cheaper than any country in Western Europe). Here are 10 of the most exciting travel destinations in the Balkans.

    Sibiu, Romania

    Sibiu, Romania

Sibiu was the European Capital of Culture, so it doesn’t need more credentials than this to warrant a visit. It is full of beautifully renovated medieval buildings, lots of fortified churches, and numerous cultural events, especially during the summer. The atmosphere is much more relaxed than in other Romanian cities.

    Dubrovnik, Croatia

Among Europeans, Croatia is rapidly becoming famous for its pristine , uncrowded and affordable beaches. Dubrovnik is probably the most beautiful of all Croatian seaside towns, and in addition to being a World Heritage Site, it is also nicknamd the Pearl of the Adriatic. It is a well-preserved medieval walled city with splendid architecture.

    Ohrid, Macedonia

    Ohrid, Macedonia

Ohrid is a large-ish town on the shores of Lake Ohrid, in Macedonia, with a rich history and tradition. This is another Balkanic World Heritage Site, and the town’s architecture is its greatest asset. The many ancient churches, monasteries and basilicas in Ohrid will fill hours and hours of awed wandering around the city.

    Butrint, Albania

Butrint used to be a city in ancient Epirus, a Roman colony, and a bishopric in the Middle Ages. Archaeological excavations have revealed some breath-taking ruins from the Hellenic and Roman periods. Each period in the city’s history is represented among the ruins.

    Škocjan Caves, Slovenia

From a scientific point of view, these caves have a tremendous importance, but even the untrained eye can easily see their beauty. As far as caves go, Škocjan are one of the most important cave systems in the world. Here you can see the largest underground canyon on the planet.

    Podgorica, Montenegro

Podgorica might not be as obviously pretty as many cities in the Balkans, but it is such a charming mix of old and new that it would be a shame not to visit it. The city has a very laid-back, Mediterranean atmosphere, with many excellent cafes and clubs.

    Prizen, Kosovo

    Prizen

Prizen is possibly the most historical city in Kosovo, and it is chock full of amazing Islamic architecture: mosques, monasteries, Turkish baths and a beautiful castle dating back to the Roman era. The Serbian quarter of the city lies in shambles, but it still has some interesting sights to offer.

    Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Mostar used to be the most diverse and vibrant city in Bosnia, but unfortunately it has suffered the most in the bombings during the war. The Old Bridge, the emblem of the city, was also destroyed, but it was rebuilt thanks to international efforts. Most of the city has been rebuilt, but it will take some time before it regains its former glory.

    Zlatibor, Serbia

Zlatibor is a beautiful mountain resort area in the south-western regions of Serbia, cornered between Mount Tara and the Veliki Rzav River. There are several towns and villages where you can stay, and there are plenty of amazing natural sights to spend your time staring at.

    Plodviv, Bulgaria

Plodviv is one of the oldest cities in Europe, and the old city centre is a pleasure to walk through. There are plenty of beautiful buildings and lots of interesting museums in the city, and sometimes performances are held in the old Roman theatre.
