The Northern Cays of Villa Clara are one hell of a good reason to visit Cuba this year. The capital of the province is Santa Clara but the cities closest to the sandy beaches are Sagua la Grande and Caibarien on the two ends of Villa Clara’s beach strap.Travel to the cays from Caibarien
You can reach the islet network of the Northern Cays driving on a causeway that starts from Caibarien and is 48 km long. It is sure that you will love the way to the cays as much as the cays themselves, it is a spectacular journey with view over the ocean, over the islets and reefs as well as the surrounding rich flora.
The nearly 48 km way is broken up by smaller bridges, nearly 50 of them. You can glimpse the cays after the 36th bridge as well as the beautiful mangrove colonies on the beach. Most of the cays are the property of tourist resorts so only guests can enjoy them, but the Bayo Las Brujas (Witches’ Cay) can be visited by anyone and is perfect for an ocean day trip.
The beaches of Villa Clara
You want to visit as many as possible of the breathtaking beaches and cays? The beachy paradise of Villa Clara is about 17 km long and consist of amazing places such as Santa Maria Cayos, Las Brujas, Ensenachos Cayos, Fragoso, Cobos or Frances Cayos.
Santa Maria Cayos is the largest cay in the area. It is linked to the mainland by a beautiful stone causeway that is one of the most perfect spots in the world for a walk. This cay is 13 square km (5 sq miles) large with 11 km of clear beach, amazing flora and the possibility to go scuba diving.
Another wonder of the area is the tiny island of Las Brujas (The Witches). Its flora and white sand beaches seem so untouched like they have just been discovered by man.
