itachan in Amazing Places | NO COMMENTSThe most beautiful waterfront cities in the world
Those who have never lived in a city near water, be it a lake, river or the ocean, miss out on a lot of fun: waterfront walks, the gulls, the sound of water and ample opportunity for various water sports. Cities have been built near water for ages, for a variety of reasons, and nowadays there are several old and beautiful waterfront cities that makes delightful destinations.
The waterfront cities on this list have more in common than the obvious aquatic element: they are also places where it is impossible not to have fun. If you like your cities next to a bit of water, here are some of the most beautiful waterfront cities in the world.
San Sebastian, Spain
There are lots of scenic cities on the coast of Europe, but this coastal town in the Basque Country trumps them all in one respect: it has arguably the best beaches of them all.
The beach of San Sebastian curves gracefully in a half-moon shape, and when you sunbathe you can plainly see the historical buildings on the old town. There’s no other waterfront cities that combines better the fun of beaches with the charm of historical architecture.
Baltimore, Maryland
Baltimore’s waterfront charm is of the gritty sort that will never make you feel like you’re in a makeshift brochure induced fantasy. The harbor of Baltimore is busy, as Chesapeake bay is one of the busiest estuaries in the world, but at the same time, the maritime atmosphere is offset by the large number of cultural attractions in the vicinity. This is a great waterfront city for those who don’t like frills.
Venice, Italy
Venice is the best example of a city living in a close relationship with the water, so much that part of the city is in the water (or is it the water that is in the city?). The various canals of Venice are often a good substitute for streets, and even when there’s no canal in sight you can never shake off the feeling that the water’s edge is not far off.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The extensive beaches of Rio are set on the backdrop of towering buildings and nice hotels where the rich spend their vacations. This is yet another contrast in the city of contrasts: rich hotels next to beaches where differences among people are almost erased. Rio de Janeiro is legendary for its beaches, and it’s waterfront is one of the first things that newcomers visit.

Guilin started out as a small village on the banks of River Li, but the present city has expanded on both sides of the river. Guilin is a charming city, with several lakes around the city center and with karst formations popping up in the most unusual places. And as beautiful as the city is, you can’t resist visiting the nearby attractions like the rice terraces at Longsheng.
