Helsinki
If you don’t have anything against a bit of cold weather, then Finland is probably one of the best places to live in Europe. This Scandinavian wunderkind has large expanses of unspoiled landscape, with scatterings of modern, organized and pretty towns and cities. You can drive for hours and hours in Finland without encountering a single soul or human settlement, but probably not without encountering a lake (which make up about 10% of the country).
This is the country of Santa Claus, of saunas and civil rights, and in general, nothing like any other countries in Europe. Here are some of the most amazing travel destinations in Finland, which will hopefully convince you to visit this magical country.
Rovaniemi
If a trip to cold and icy Lapland sounds like a good holiday idea (and it really is), then you will probably pass through the town of Rovaniemi on your way there. Rovaniemi is the largest town in Europe according to surface area, and a major educational center in Finnish Lapland.
More than a quarter of the people living in Rovaniemi are students, so in summer the city is quite abandoned, but during the academic year it is a lively place and around the holidays it’s transformed into a winter wonderland.
Tampere

Tampere is cinched between Lake Näsijärvi to the north, and Lake Pyhäjärvi in the south, lying on an isthmus between the two. The city has a lovely center, and quite a few very interesting museums (focusing especially on working class history), and some rather impressive church buildings. There are loads of things to see around Tampere, and the surrounding lakes offer plenty of opportunity for cruises.
Savonlinna
The small lakeside town of Savonlinna is a quiet destination, but never boring. The city was built on some islands in Lake Saimaa, but except for the suburbs, everything can be visited on foot. The main attraction of Savonlinna is its beautiful medieval castle, Olavinlinna (St Olaf’s Castle), the northernmost stone castle in the world.
The castle is beautiful on the outside and it is built on the scenic shores of a lake, and although most of its furnishing were lost there are free guided tourist that will make a tour of the castle halls interesting.

Koli National Park might well be responsible for some of the ‘human’ treasures of Finland, composers and painters Jean Sibelius, Juhani Aho and Eero Järnefelt whose works were supposedly inspired by Koli.
This 3000 hectare national park on the shores of Lake Pielinen contains some of the most beautiful landscapes in Finland, especially in wintertime.
Ylläs
Ylläs is a very popular ski resort in Finland, and a place where you are guaranteed to find oceans of snow every winter. Ylläs is also the northernmost train station in the country, and the terminus point of a long and scenic trip from Helsinki, spanning almost 1000 kilometers. If you’re in Ylläs in December, visit Lainio Snow Village.
