Probably for many people, the first things that spring to mind when it comes to Myanmar, otherwise known as Burma, are mostly on the negative side: a repressive government that determined economic sanctions from other countries, brutally repressed rebellions and even a Nobel Prize for Peace winner placed under house arrest for years.
Myanmar projects a pretty bleak picture for outsiders, but that is not what strikes first time visitors to the country. As soon as you land in Myanmar, you will notice how extraordinarily diverse it is, the loving way in which traditional culture is preserved, the pride people take in their historical monuments, and how incredibly friendly they are. Myanmar is an awe-inspiring country, so take a chance and visit some of the most amazing tourist destinations in Myanmar.
Bago
Myanmar is predominantly Buddhist, and you will see many temples while traveling along the country. But when you get to Bago, the sheer number of temples is simply overwhelming. Visit the Shwe-tha-lyaung Reclining Buddha, a huge statue erected in teh 10th century, overgrown by the jungle after the 18th century and restored to magnificence in the 1880’s. The gilded Shwemawdaw Pagoda and Mahazedi, the Great Stupa are also worthy of a couple of hours of your time.
Bagan
Myanmar has countless fascinating archaeological sites, but none quite as stunning as Bagan and its temples, pagodas, stupas and ruins. The complex dates back to the 11th century, and it is simply huge – you might want to rent a bike or a horse cart to get around.
TheĀ most important temple in Bagan, Ananda, is a unique fusion of Mon and Indian architecture. For a truly unforgettable experience, book a hot air balloon over Bagan.
Ngapali village
The small village of Ngapali in Rakhine state is a the kind of seaside community that even the most crowd-hating travelers will love. The beaches of Ngapali are quiet, pristine and fringed with palm trees, and the village is a great place to experience the rural way of life, without noise or pollution. There are lots of local eateries where you can sample the traditional cuisine of the state.
Kyaikhto
The small town of Kyaikhto is home to one of the most imporbably and jaw-dropping attractions in the country, a pagoda precariously balanced atop a golden boulder, perched on the edge of a cliff.
Although there is not much else to see in town except for the Golden Rock, the temple is strange and wonderful enough to fill your day.
