  • The Micronesian Island of Pohnpei

    Pohnpei island is part of the Federate States of Micronesia, being also the largest and tallest among the four islands of the country.

    The other islands that comprise Micronesia are Chuup, Kosrae and Yap.

    The states lie east of the Philippines and Palau, north of Australia, west of the Marshall Islands and Nauru, northeast of Papua New Guinea and south of Marianas and Guam 

    The capital of the country is Palikir while the largest city is Weno.

    The official and national language is English but there are also three regional languages that are recognized by the state like Kosraen, Chuukese, and Woleaian.

    Pohnpei

    Pohnpei Islands population is 36,196 and the density is 97/km2.

    Seven tiny outer islands comprise Pohnpei:

    • Pingelap is known for its reefs and beautiful lagoons and has a population of 250 people. They also have their own language called Pingelapese.
    • Sapwuahfik or formerly known as Ngatik with a population of 433. The population is called the Ngatik Creole that are located only on this island.
    • Nukuoro is one of the most remote island in the world. Despite not having tourism, it has some marvelous beaches. The population is about 380 and the main occupations are fishing and agriculture. The Nukuoro language is mainly spoken
    • Kapingamarangi has a population of 500 with a village called Porakied. Industry and fishing is common and fruits and vegetables are also highly grown and exported.
    • Ant is famous for its recreational activities such as surfing, snorkeling and diving. It is a popular tourist destination. Distinguished colonial birds are present and it is currently one of those islands that is not inhabitated.
    • Mokil lies about 160 km of Ponhpei known for its lagoons and beaches. The population is 150 and the locals speak Mokilese. The Mokilese language is part of the Micronesian language
    • Pakin is another popular site for snorkeling and diving. The community is known for having a traditional leadership called Sounirek Pakein.

    Pohnpei itself is located between the midway of Honolulu and Manila in the east of Caroline islands.

    The topography is vast and rich. In addition being a mountainous island filled with lush and verdant areas, it has also coastal plains filled with slopes, alluvial fans, waterfalls, and channels that connect the lagoon. Heavy rain forests also fill Pohnpei along with mangrove swamps. The highest peak is 2,595 ft. A large Coral Reef surrounds the island which is a heaven for scuba divers.

    The climate of the country is tropical. Rainfalls occur yearly. The Fauna is complex, having different species of sharks, sea turtles and manta rays.

    Ponhpei itself is known for having many outstanding sights that are worth a visit for tourists. From Mountains to beaches and ruins. It is particularly famous for its numerous waterfalls. It is surely a destination that it will not disappoint you since it offers everything for everybody. The Culture, natural landscapes, little resorts, all kinds of traditions and languages will fulfill your ideal destination.

    The best to reach this destination is by plane, which usually connects the Marshall Islands, Guam and Hawaii

     

    Check out these sites, once you visit this paradise:

    • Sahwartik/Sahwarlap Waterfall consists of two waterfalls and its known for being one of the tallest with a great panoramas of the falls and its tropical jungles. The falls are stumbles into the jungles.
    • Pahn Takai Cave and Falls. The hiking road to this destination is worth a try. It is 150 feet high and the cave is the home of many species of bats. The sight is also the home of relics from WWII like canons, tanks and others.
    • Kepirohi Waterfall  is the most popular. Being 20 meters tall and 30 meters wide, it is made of basalt stones.It has a large open base lake which is an ideal place for swimming and a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike. The surrounding is also known for its variety of flowers.
    • Liduduhniap Waterfall. This waterfall is known for its exceptional views and surroundings. It is highly covered by a vast tropical jungle, making this place an appealing destination for picnic lovers and for those who just want to relax.
    • Nan Madol ruins. Much of the ruins origins are unknown, but it is stated that it was built around 500 and 1500 AD and was a royal residence. Tombs of the royal families, guest house for visitors, servant quarters. It was the capital of the Saudeleur Dynasty, being a former religious and political center. Because Nad Madol ruins is split in 100 islands and covers 90 hectares, it received the nicknamed called “Venice of the North”
    • Lenger Island was an important strategic and defense point for the Japanese in World War II. During that time marine flying boat base was established here. Despite being almost destroyed throughout the war, it was highly restored and functioned as the official airport of Pohnpei until the 1970’s.
    • Dolopwuropwur Guns sight. In spite of its vast Japanese WWII remains like tanks,abandoned bunkers and bases, it has one of the most magnificent places of the island. It has an impressive view and its an important site for both historical and natural points of view. It was used by the Japanese army as a camp base during the war.
    • Pohndollap is the islands distinguished mountainous area. Mt Sokehs is known for its exquisite background. The road to the mountain is one of a kind, as it passes through the typical jungles of the island until you reach the giant. The road takes about 2-3 hours. From the top Palikir Pass can be seen which is known for being a good surf spot. The place is recommended for mountain climbers and mountaineers. It was an excellent location for the Japanese army for building facilities like bunkers, traps and others which are abandoned yet still present even nowadays.
