Step into a city and become part of its day to day life by visiting cafes, galleries, theaters and busy shopping centers, get to know its streets and parks and people. But sometimes, if you want to fully appreciate a city, you need to take a step back and admire things from afar.
A city’s skyline can be just as iconic as its individual landmarks, and in some cases even more so. After all, a modern skyscraper seems all the more impressive when you see it from a distance, towering over all the other buildings around it! If you are an urban explorer who likes to see the best features of a city from an outsider’s point of view, here are some of the best city skylines in the world.
Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town has more than its fair share of great architecture, but in the case of the South African capital it’s not the man-made structures that make the city’s skyline so unforgettable – it’s the natural scenery. The unique shape of Table Mountain looms over the city in the distance, overshadowing even the tallest buildings. The best spot to see this piece of the skyline is the Victoria & Albert Waterfront, the colorful historic heart of Cape Town.

The taller and more sparkly the buildings of a city, the better its skyline, and Hong Kong is the best proof for this. This modern metropolis has over 40 buildings that are over 200 meters tall, and most of them were built in the past decade.
The city makes no compromises when it comes to night lighting, and at night the tall spires become impressive beyond reason, and it looks more like a space station than a city!
New York, USA
The Big Apple has one of the thickest skyscraper forests in any city in the world, and many of its buildings are so well known that most people could name them on the skyline much like one names constellations in the sky. Thanks to the countless movies set in New York, the skyline is now familiar even to those who’ve never actually been there before. Skyscrapers like the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, or the New York Times building make New York’s skyline really memorable.
Tokyo, Japan
The ever-growing Japanese capital is one of the most populous cities in the world and adorned with features that you can’t see anywhere else in the world.
The Eiffel Tower clone Tokyo Tower changes colors every night, the popular districts of the city are dazzling ensembles of neon signs day in and day out, and since the city is so dense, it seems like the city has not one skyline, but a dozen.

London doesn’t have nearly as many skyscrapers as some other cities, nor is it as flashily lit at night, but the UK capital has an unmistakable historic/romantic atmosphere that is an endless source of fascination. The Big Ben, the Tower Bridge or the London Eye are only a few of the landmarks that grace London’s skyline, but there is plenty more to it!
