  • Fun Easter destinations: Five Ski Resorts That Rock

In the last post I was suggesting some less conventional ways to spend Easter, among which I also included toe possibility to go for a short ski vacation. Fortunately, the Rockies are still tucked under a  thick layer of snow, so, no matter whether you prefer the slopes of Wyoming, Utah, Colorado or California, you will be able to ski in the same perfect conditions (and even get some nice tan). An impromptu ski vacation won’t give you too much trouble if you have the necessary equipment and a  spacious four wheel vehicle. In case you need to take the plane, it might get a little pricier (tickets have a tendency to get really expensive near Easter).

However, in terms of skiing, April is far out of the peak season, so accommodation and equipment rental rates will have significantly reduced. Based on some recent snow reports and also on the amount of fun they are likely to provide, here are the most recommended USA ski resorts for the Easter break:

    Big Sky, Montana

Big Sky Montana represents an ideal base to explore Yellowstone National Park during springtime (although, judging after the park’s elevation, it will very likely look like in the middle of winter). At the beginning of this month, Big Sky Montana is getting ready to end the 2009-2010 season with a thrilling Spring Run-off (a crazy acrobatic ski tournament), which will be held on April 10. However, with over 50 inches base depth snow, Big Sky is still in the game.

    Squaw Valley, California

The 2009-2010 season has been a very eventful period for Squaw Valley, California, who has celebrated 50 years since it was the host of the Winter Olympics. That’s more than enough time for this hype resorts in the northern part of lake Tahoe to establish a much appreciated ski tradition. During the Easter weekend, visitors are awaited with lots of surprises and interactive events, including the annual town race,an open air mass and freestyle jamming sessions.

    Powder Mountain, Utah

With an balanced proportion between beginner, intermediate and advanced skier slopes and the largest ‘skiable’ area in the Unites States, Powder Mountain, Utah is also one of the oldest resorts in the country. In the second weekend of April, just as the season ends, Powder Mountain will be the host a series of manifestations including ‘no rules’ contests, barbecues, concerts and pipe jamming.

    Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Whole in Wyoming is far from a cheap ski resort: however, this tiny town squeezed between the sharp ridges of the Grand Tetons is unbeatable when it comes to long-lasting snow and breathtaking views. Snow is still pretty decent in April and ski facilities are functioning close to their full capacity – don’t miss the chance to taste an apres-ski cocktail at one of the resort’s legendary bars.

    Sierra at Tahoe, California

Its intimate, friendly atmosphere makes Sierra at Tahoe a favorite family destination. Although it represents a single mountain resort, Sierra at Tahoe manages to attract plenty of visitors, mainly because of its proximity to the Nevada border and the abundant snow received every year.
