Budget travel in Bali
“I’m going to Bali” is more often than not what you hear well-off people or celebrities on TV saying, and rarely budget travelers. Bali does have a reputation for being an amazingly beautiful place (it is nicknamed the Island of the Gods, after all), but as with many other stunning places, you have to dish out quite a lot of money to truly enjoy it.
However, there’s a budget alternative even to Bali, and it’s really not that difficult to save money on your trip to this island paradise. So here are some tips on budget travel in Bali, for those who are conscious about their holiday spending.
Free attractions
It’s amazing how many free attractions you can find in Bali, and you can easily spend a week or more sightseeing without spending on anything else but the transport. The temples of Bali are some of the most interesting sights on the island, and there literally hundreds that are worth visiting.
Each village in Bali is required to have at least three temples: a temples in the ‘clean’ part of the village, the village temples in the center, and a temple of the dead in the ‘unclean’ side of the village. Some temples require you to pay for your visit, but there are lots of them that will let you in for free (although you might have to buy a sarong and sash to enter).
The natural sights of the island are, of course, free, and you can walk the beaches for miles and enjoy the view. Nature lovers will definitely enjoy an exploration of the mangrove forests or even the neatly terraced rice paddies that can be found all over Bali. If you’re looking for some relaxation, you can go to a hot spring – there are plenty of spas available too, but the plain, traditional springs will be much cheaper.

Bali’s cuisine is a huge part of the experience of visiting the island, especially if you are an amateur foodie. While touristy restaurants look really good, for cheaper (and more authentic) food, visit the smaller eateries off the beaten path. In Bali, luxury restaurants are not always the best option. If you want to eat like a local, then buy some inexpensive and delicious Balinese ‘fast food’ from kaki lima, or roving vendors.
For some budget-friendly Indonesian food, visit a padang restaurant, where you can find spicy dishes common in Sumatra (you can choose your topping of choice which will be served with a helping of steamed rice). Vegeratian food can be a bit difficult to find in cheaper places, but you can solve this problem by ordering two or more side dishes.
