A skier’s guide to Switzerland

Switzerland is undiputedly the historical birthplace of winter sports and what is more, of skiing as a recreational activity. Europeans came here for the winter season since the turn of the last century to start off some of the most beautiful slopes of Europe with their rudimentary skies and sledges.

Skiing for beginners

Those who do not have a lot of experience with skiing should definitely start out with places like Kandersteg, Villars, Saas-Fee, Crans-Montana or Meiringen-Hasliberg. Only in Villars, 120 km (74.5 miles) of ski trucks and 47 ski lifts await the brave starters, also, this place is very safe for families with young children as well.

Crans-Montana, which is looking at the valley of the river Rhone, is mostly the favorite of more refined travelers who prefer the quite while Saas-Fee is literally the place of ‘mosts’.

Here is the world’s highest underground railway (on 3500 m) and on the mountain peak a look-out restaurant built in the highest place. It revolves around it’s own axis and provides an astonishing view over the mountains.The world’s largest museum carved into ice is also in Saas-Fee, it tells visitors about the forming and the life of glaciers.

Guide for experienced skiers

Those more advanced in the practice of winter sports should choose Grindelwald, St. Moritz, Flims, Adelboden or Engelberg as a destination. Engelberg can be especially pleasant for those who do not prefer complex ski-truck systems linked with many lifts.

Grindelwald is also very exciting, though it is mainly a snowboard and sled paradise. We can meet ‘mosts’ here as well: the highest railway in Europe and its terminal point, Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe (3,454 m). The terminal is also a look-out that offers a literally dizzying view.

Experienced skiers may have heared about Andelboden, as that is one of the largest ski paradises in Switzerland, with more than 200 km (124 miles) ski truck and 57 lifts.

Flims is really for the pros of skiing with its 100 km (60 miles) of ski trail that is classified as black (very difficult). From the village you can also go up to the 2,675 m high Cassons where there are two trails only for the experts and the bravest.
