Spring is coming, which means that winter-hating travelers can hit the road again and enjoy a bit of sunlight and fresh air at some new and exciting destination. The warm weather and the pretty flowers are reason enough to go for a walk in the park or take a hike on the hill near town, but they are just as good of a reason to go somewhere farther.

Spring is a time of celebration in many countries where winter makes itself felt, and even without any festivals or events, the multitude of springs flowers manage to create a festive atmosphere nonetheless. If you’re willing to travel to see some blooms and buds, here are some of the best destinations in the world to see spring flowers.

Kyoto, Japan

You can find garden-variety spring flowers in Japan wherever you see, but your run of the mill crocuses or tulips are not what make Japan so spectacular in spring: it’s the cherry blossoms. Thousands of cherry trees bloom around April and May in Japan, and they are so well engrained in Japanese culture that going out to a park or river bank to admire the flowers is a really big deal. Kyoto’s Maruyama Park and Arashiyama district are very popular with the cherry blossom viewing crowd.

Skagit Valley, Washington, USA

Europeans flock to the Netherlands in spring to get their fix of tulip madness, but people in the US have Skagit Valley. The tulip farms in the valley can easily rival those in the Netherland, and the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival (held each year from April 1 to April 30) draws hundreds of thousands of flower enthusiasts.

Namaqualand Flower Route, South Africa

Namaqualand is considered to be South Africa’s outback, but if you’re expecting to find a desolate and inhospitable landscape (which is not far from the truth for half of the year), you’re in for a huge surprise if you visit in spring.

Namaqualand in spring is a vast carpet of wildflowers of all shapes, sizes and colors. There are several thousand species of plants in the area, and many of them bloom in spring. There are plenty of hiking trails, cycling trails and drives that allow you to bask in the beauty of spring flowers however much you want.

Jiaozi Snow Mountain, Yunnan, China

Kunming is famous for its hot springs, sights and parks and flower fields, and in spring there are flowers wherever you look in and around the city.

But the real spring stunner in Yunnan in Jiaozi Snow Mountain, famed for its countless rhododendron bushes that come alive with color. Some say that the bushes are centuries old, but they bloom every spring without fail, covering the mountain in a technicolor carpet.

Cotswolds, England, UK

The Cotsworlds are England’s little rural paradise, where tiny villages with thatched houses sit in the middle of the pleasant British countryside. A riot of wild yellow daffodils cover the Cotswolds in spring, so much that you can see entire fields that seem a solid yellow. The Daffodil Way in Leadon Valley is an amazing circular route for flower-fans.
