On New Year’s Even, most people usually go to a party, have a nice dinner, dance and drink and make resolutions for the upcoming year. And while this is a pretty fun way to spend the last night of the year, after years and years of doing the same thing for New Years, it’s not unthinkable that you should want a change.

So what is there to do? You can either go somewhere you’ve never been before, celebrate New Year’s in a different time zone, join the locals in some fun traditions or do something that is not in the least related to New Year’s. Watch the first sunrise on top of a volcano

Pack your bags for Tenerife for New Year’s and indulge in the joys of an island holiday. You can party, drink champagne on the beach and do usual New Year’s stuff, but don’t go to sleep early in the morning. Instead, go to the top of Teibe Mountain, an active volcano and the tallest peak in Spain.

For a truly unique New Year’s, go on a budget tour of the Sahara Desert in Morocco, and for the last week or so of the year you can reflect on what you’d like to do in the future while being surrounded by timeless sand dunes. But don’t spend all your time on introspection – New Year’s parties in a desert tent will surely be unforgettable.

Go to the biggest party in the world

Rio de Janeiro’s New Year’s party on Copacabana Beach rivals only the carnival – this huge party usually has over 2 million attendees. This event is brilliant, colorful and full of music, dancing and enthusiasm.
