  • The most beautiful World Heritage Sites in the world

If a place has the label of Unesco World Heritage Site, then you can rest assured that what awaits you is without a doubt one of the most stunning places on the planet. Any place can become a world heritage site, whether it is natural or built by humans, the only condition is that it should have a great cultural or physical significance.

There are many such places on the planet, over 900 in fact, scattered over all the continents. Although all of these places are really amazing, some of them are obviously higher up on the list of things you should see before you die, so here a list of the most beautiful world heritage sites in the world.

    Tongariro National Park, New Zealand

If you like hiking and don’t mind making a bit of an effort until you reach your destination, you should definitely tackle Tongariro National Park with its surreal volcanic landscape.

The area has several hiking trails, some of which last longer than others, but if you are looking for a day trip, you can hike up to Tongariro Crossing.

    Škocjan Caves, Slovenia

Škocjan Caves is the most significant underground geological phenomenon in the world, a natural wonder on par with the Grand Canyon or the Great Barrier Reef. The cave system is actually a huge underground canyon formed by the Reka River, which disappears under the ground Velika Dolina and resurfaces near Monfalcone.

The caves are amazingly beautiful, but also significant from a archaeological point of view, as they have been inhabited since ancient times.

    Cape Floristic Region, South Africa

If you like plants, then the most obvious choice for you is the field of flowers and plants at the Cape floristic region. The are is naturally beautiful, but its significance is given by the more than 6000 plant species found in it.

Although the region’s size is insignificant when compared to the bulk of the African continent, it is home to 20% of Africa’s plant species.

    Tikal, Guatemala

The mysterious Maya ruins at Tikal, hidden in the thick Guatemalan junge, has been a source of fascination for archaeologists and adventurers ever since its discovery. Tikal is one of the largest Maya cities that ever existed, and it was abandoned in the 10th century for economic and demographic reasons, but it was rediscovered in the 19th century.

    Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland

The Giant’s Causeway is one of those natural sights which look like they must have been designed by humans, because they look like they’ve been designed purposefully.

The hexagonal basalt columns of the causeway appeared as a result of a volcanic eruption, but they really do look as if they could have served as a walkway for a fairy-tale giant.
