  • Five US food fairs that are hard to resist

    As much as one will keep going on and on about his inspiring road trips and out of the ordinary travel experiences, now one can affirm that he/she has experienced the real America without getting to taste its food.  The United States might seem like a fast food nation, but few other countries can display such an enormous diversity of ingredients, combinations and ethnic influences.

    While even the smallest town will have at least one Chinese or Mexican restaurant, bigger cities go as far as organizing annual ethnic food fests and being home to trend setting restaurants. From here and there, we managed to bundle up a brief list of USA’s most appealing food fairs.

    Watsonville Strawberry Festival, California

    Just name me that person who could say no to a slice of strawberry cheesecake!.. From perfectly riped California strawberries to the most extravagant strawberry treats, there is nothing strawberry that this Monterey Bay food fair can refuse you. During August 31 and September 1, 2010, Watsonville Strawberry Festival will be celebrating its sweet sixteen anniversary with concerts, strawberry pie eating contests and old-fashioned carnival rides.

    LA Street Food Fair, California

    No matter if you consider this to be a good or a bad thing, the truth is that street food does have its fans.  The first edition of LA Street Food Fair has reunited the most successful street food vendors, a caravan of LA’s favorite food trucks, and, of course, street food fans gone wilds at the sole thought that they can taste all these goodies for 2 or 3 dollars a piece.

    National Buffalo Wings Festivals, New York

    Buffalo, NY is, as you probably might have already guessed, the birth city on one of America’s most popular dishes – hot buffalo sauce. Although the initiative to organize a Buffalo Wings Festival only came in 2002 (and the organizers now claim that they stole the whole idea from a movie), this Labor Day event has already attracted more than half a million visitors.

    Gilroy Garlic Festival, California

    Some find it hard to imagine that one can create such flamboyant dishes like garlic ice cream or garlic cookies, but during the 3 days of festival, you’ll get the chance to sample (and, most important, smell) them all. Gilroy Garlic Festival will soon be celebrating 32 years, a good enough number to place this Califonia fair among the nation’s favorite food events.

    Taste of Chicago, Illinois

    A veteran among America’s food fests, Taste of Chicago offers an exhaustive perspective over Windy City’s gourmet food.  Millions of food aficionado’s gather each year in Grand Park to sample the latest creations from Chicago’s most acclaimed chefs. Between a bite of chicken kebabs and a sip of wine, visitors can enjoy all kinds of auxiliary activities, like talent shows, theater representations, concerts and street performances.

    Went to the Garlic Festival last year, and was a little disappointed that they wasn’t more garlic flavored food. But the garlic ice cream (which is free – and the line goes pretty quickly) and deep-fried garlic cloves were really good!

    Hoping to check out the Strawberry Festival this year.
