Gypsy music is one of the most fun, creative and diverse styles of music in the world. And as with any other kind of music, it’s not that easy to draw its borders – so we have traditional gypsy music, Gypsy jazz, gypsy punk and maybe even others.
And if you’re interested in this soulful kind of music, there are lots of events where you can listen to the greatest Gypsy music bands in the world. Grab your festival gear and go to one of the best Gypsy music festivals in the world.
Karavan! International Music Festival, Australia
This fairly new festival has just had its second edition, and let’s just say that it probably exceeded all the expectations of its creators. Karavan takes place in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, and spends a couple of days in each city before moving to the next.
This year, bands from the Czech Republic, Turkey, Germany and several Australian acts participated, plus there were workshops on Gypsy dance and percussion.
New York Gypsy Festival
It’s not yet known who will perform at this year’s New York Gypsy Festival (there is still time until the autumn, when the event is usually held), but last year’s lineup brought together a great variety of groups, from traditional brass bands to saxophone, from amazing vocals to DJ music. The list of artists is truly impressive, and there’s a good balance between local and international acts.
Gypsy Jazz In Paradise, Crested Butte, Colorado
In August, the idyllic mountain town of Crested Butte in Colorado will host a great festival in the honor of famous French/German guitarist Django Reinhardt, who single-handedly invented an entirely new technique for gypsy jazz guitar. The lineup for the festival is not known yet, but you can be assured that you’ll be able to see the best of the world’s gypsy jazz bands.
Gypsy Arts Festival, UK
The Gypsy Arts Festival in the UK is dedicated to the art of travellers, a group of Gypsies in the British Isles who still preserve much of their traditional lifestyle, and have an incredibly rich art and music.
The festival is not limited to music, so what you’ll get is an amazing jumble of Balkan Gypsy bands, Spanish Flamenco dancers, Rajasthani Gypsy fakirs, traditional UK step-dancers, Scottish Traveller storytellers, Gypsy Roma Traveller visual arts, film, photography and crafts.
