Bogota, and Colombia in general, has a far worse reputation then it deserves, so it’s not really surprising that many travelers tend to avoid it. Colombia’s capital is infamous for its various underworld-related stories, most of which are not likely to be true anyway.
In fact, Bogota is a very pleasant holiday destination, and it is far from being a city without history or culture. If you are looking for an educational and fun holiday in South America, Bogota might just be the perfect destination for you. Here are the top 5 tourist attractions in Bogota.
Donacion Botero
You can see some of the works of world-acclaimed Colombian artist Fernando Botero at the Donacion Botero in Bogota, which the artist himself donated to the city. In addition to Botero’s works, the collection also contains some interesting pieces by Picasso, Renoir, Monet, Dali. There is no charge for visiting the museum.
Gold Museum
The Gold Museum is one of those kinds of museum that awakens the greedy goldminer in everyone. The museum displays pre-Colombian gold artifacts from Colombia as well as the surrounding countries. It’s up to you whether you choose to look at the displays as art or as treasure, but you definitely won’t be able to take your eyes off them.
Cerro de Monserrate
If you’d like to see an amazing panorama view of the city, you can take the funicular up to Cerro de Monserrate, one of the highest points of the city, and after basking in the landscape, you can gorge yourself with delicious French or Colombian food at one of the restaurants at the top of the Cerro. Dress warm, because it tends to be chilly at the top, and don’t forget your sunscreen either.
Maloka
Maloka is one of the only science centers in South America, and a pretty recent one too (it was opened in 1998). If you are interested in interactive exhibitions about science-related stuff such as telecommunications, biodiversity, space, physics and the environment, you shouldn’t skip Maloka. The center also has the only dome theatre in South America.

Most of the city’s famous and less famous landmarks are located in the La Candelari district, a place with an incredible history and many beautiful buildings. Some of the most interesting museums in Bogota can be found in La Candelaria, as well as many old churches and some very interesting colonial buildings.
Even if you don’t have a particular destination, the paved streets lined with colorful two-story houses are an excellent place for a walking tour.
