If you’ve seen or heard about Stephen King’s Shining, the horror novel that was adapted into a successful feature film, you are probably aware that haunted hotels are not the best place to spend the night. But for those of you who crave a bit of excitement (or know better than to believe in ghosts), staying at a haunted hotel might seem like an appealing experience.
And you can findĀ hotels that are supposedly haunted all over the world, and the only thing that they have in common are their unwanted resident spirits. Here are 10 haunted hotels where you can spend the night (if you dare).
1. Hotel San Carlos, Phoenix, Arizona
The ghost that is said to haunt this hotel met a tragic end – it is supposedly the spirit of a young women who, jilted by her lover (a bellboy at a nearby hotel), threw herself from one of the windows of the hotel in 1928, and witnesses claim that she hasn’t left the hotel yet. Guests and staff have seen her walking the hotel’s corridors in her evening gown.
2. Castle Leslie, Dublin
Paul McCartney and Heather Mills got married in this historic Irish castle, but that’s not what makes the hotel scary. The castle and its grounds have belonged to the Leslie family for the past three centuries, and some of them liked it so much that they never left.
3. Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, Alberta, Canada
This hotel is apparently so great that its employees don’t really want to retire…a bellman in the 60’s, named Sam, said that he would come back when he had to retire, and apparently he really did, after his death a few years later. He is supposedly the only ghost in the entire hotel, and he is also quite peaceful, they say.
4. Hotel del Coronado, San Diego
There are several scary tales told at this hotel, but the most famous one claims that one of the hotel’s guests in 1982 left her room to meet her husband, and was found shot on the beach days later. Guests still report strange sights and sounds in her room. Even one of President Ford’s bodyguards reported seeing the ghost, when he was visiting San Diego.

This inn is small, very old (dating back to the 14th century) and well preserved – the perfect accommodation for any history buff. It is also said to be quite haunted, especially by a soldier who fought in the Napoleonic Wars. A local girl tried to rob him in his sleep, and when he woke up mid-robbery, she stabbed him to death.
