When someone decides on an island holiday, they usually think of some tropical island in the Atlantic of Pacific, but rarely anything located in (or in the vicinity of) Europe. However, Europe has quite a few islands, and many of them are overlooked in favor of their more exotic counterparts. European islands range from the sunny, with lots of beaches, to the wild and windswept. Whatever you prefer, there’s definitely an island in Europe that you’ll just adore. So here are the top 5 islands in Europe.

Majorca, Spain

Majorca is the most popular island in Europe, and when Europeans feel like lounging in the sun, partying or taking a dip, this is where they go. The natural scenery of the island is amazing, but it’s the nightlife that draws most of the visitors.

Palma de Majorca, the capital city, is a paradise for nightlife addicts, and beach-goers will have a hard time deciding which beach to try first. And if you’re more interested in the culture of the island, there are plenty of places to see, for example Cathedral La Seu and the Palacio Real de la Aludaina.

Gran Canaria, Spain

The landscape of Gran Canaria can seem a bit desolate at the first sight, but the pristine dune beaches attract many tourists all year round. One of the most interesting historic sites on the island is Castillo de la Luz, a former fortress built to protect the town from pirates.

It was turned into a museum, and it is merely one of the many sights in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the largest city on the island.

Rhodes, Greece

Greece has no shortage of islands, and while all of them have something that makes them special, it’s almost impossible to see them all in the course of one holiday. Rhodes is an island shrouded in history and legends (the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the world supposedly stood in the city of Rhodes).

The old town of Rhodes has lots of medieval buildings and winding paved streets. The island also has some great beaches in the Kallithea area, as well as some good scuba diving spots.

Aran Islands, Ireland

If the wild beauty of Ireland has captured your heart, then the Aran Islands, at the mouth of Galway Bay, are a must see for you. The main attractions of the islands are several Iron Age forts, like Dun Aengus in Inishmore, O’Brien’s Castle on Inis Oírr (dating back to the 14th century), and Teampull Bheanáin, the world’s smallest church.

Isle of Wight, UK

The Isle of Wight is one of the most well known islands of the UK, not only due to its size, but also due to its famous former residents (Queen Victoria and Lord Tennyson among others).

The Isle has historical, natural and cultural sights aplenty: the colored sands of Alum Bay, Osborne House (a royal residence), Carisbrooke Castle, the fascinating cliffs of the Needles and…dinosaur fossils (the 4th best location in the world, according to National Geographic Magazine).
